There will probably be some quibbling over what actually constitutes a "sport." In my mind, most sports are defined by equally balanced teams. The teams in question can be a team of one. (Tennis) The actual conditions that each team faces usually have to be balanced as well. Success or failure has to be determined by how well each team can react to equal conditions.

In this respect, I would say that Chess probably qualifies. It is certainly a much more cerebral "sport." But it is based on two teams squaring off under equivalent circumstances. The abilities of the players determine the winner.

As long as a game adheres to these guidelines, I would say that everything is fine. If a game doesn't adhere to these guidelines, I think it should be required that it use the trappings of an existing sport. An example of this would be Punch-Out. Punch-Out is not about the sport of boxing, at its core it is a single player rhythm-puzzle game. But it uses the sport of boxing for its graphical trappings and tone.

I was actually thinking of something kinda like this. Well, it's one idea out of many I've been brainstorming in my DESIGN GRID.

If I am going to join I will probably try to make a volleyclub game.. Although that might be hard, I am already thinking how to control the players but there is just so many things going on at the same time!

  • Fake Soccer Injury: The Video Game - The game begins with your player getting checked and going into a ragdoll state. You have to control the ragdoll to make the most painful looking injury possible.

I kind of feel like it's a TIGsource faux pas to post game suggestions since I'm not a dev but whatever:

  • Baseball played on a massive trampoline. Outfielding is hilarious.
  • Team's mascots are real animals loose on the field and have to be avoided during play. Fights between mascots are just a part of the game.

Also, not actually a suggestion, I just won't consider NASCAR a sport until these are standard rules:
Every member of a car's crew takes turns driving between pitstops. Then I might consider drivers athletes.

Holy shit I fucking love TIGsource compos.

Would chess count as a sport?

Random fact: in Russia, you can buy chess sets at sporting goods stores.

You know, with all the sport-themed games in other genres, I'm starting to toss around the idea of making a traditional sport game.

Super excited for another TIGCOMPO.  I haven't written a line of code in a few months, but just installed Win8 and GameMaker on my Mac.  Not gonna have much time, but hoping to get something together for this.

PSA: Don't forget that about Thanksgiving (for those who travel and celebrate it) when scoping/planning your game's development.
