Our Kickstarter campaign was successful! Since we now have an obligation to keep our backers up to date foremost, we are ceasing regular updates to this devlog. If you'd like to continue following our progress, please consider pre-ordering and joining our private developer forum. Thanks!

Description
Chasm is a 2D Action-RPG Platformer currently in development for Windows, Mac, & Linux. Taking equal inspiration from hack ‘n slash dungeon crawlers (procedurally generated dungeons, loot drops, etc) and Metroidvania-style platformers, the game aims to immerse you in its 2D fantasy world full of exciting treasure, deadly enemies, and abundant secrets.

Players take up the role of a soldier passing through a remote mining town on their journey home from a long war. The town’s miners have recently disappeared after breaching a long-forgotten temple far below the town, and reawakened an ancient slumbering evil. Now trapped in the town by supernatural forces, you’re left with no option but to explore the mines below, battle enemies and bosses, and increase your abilities in hopes of finally escaping and returning home.

It's been a crazy couple weeks! At the beginning of December, I got heavy into the Linux Monogame port (my older XNA game 48 Chambers is now running in Ubuntu!), then my old game dev partner came to visit for a few days, and then I became ill for about 5 days!

While I couldn't code, I did try to work on the story and design a bit, so it's starting to get a little fleshed out. I finally got back to coding a couple days ago and got the Blacksmith working (you can buy and sell equipment now, rough screenshot above), and started work on the Tavern and Mining Company.

I need to do a bit more work to the surface, then I'm going to start working on the enemies and traps for the Mines, and better random dungeon generation specifically for that area. Also, the mine tileset should be coming very soon.

Here's a mockup by Tony:

More soon, including a new video hopefully! :D

rogue + platformer? sounds like a good combination! And the artwork is totally amazing! I'm in :3 !

I wish I can give suggestion or critiques, but at this moment I can't think of anything. Everything looks perfect so far ^^;

Thanks guys! I really appreciate all the kind words. Today was kinda productive. I did another pass on the design doc, cleaning stuff up and fixing lots of my typos! The core plot is pretty much laid out now, but I need to start thinking about the script and how the town characters play into things.

I decided it was time to make a new enemy, so I made the Ice Slimes. They're one of the first enemies you'll fight in the Mines. They hop at you with a randomized strength, so make sure to keep your distance. I added a screenshot up above!

Shooting to have a new video uploaded in the next day!

Love the snowy cave and the first landscape. The dungeon with the tiled stones doesn't look as good, but I guess it's better for the random generation of levels?

Edit: btw, did you create these sounds yourself?

Looks really promising this far! I really dig the fluent animations and the art style in general.
Do you already have a musician? (Or is the background music temporary too?) If you don't, PM me, I'd be glad to help out with the project!
