Sure, Unity3D is not Unity2D, but is a very versatile tool. I created my own sprite class - cheap and crude - so I could use 2D sprites in a 3D world. And that's sweet, much more when you start doing camera tricks. You can't play with cameras on a pure 2D engine.

It's free, so just try! Reading and rendering a spritesheet is just a matter of playing with uv texture coordinates!
