I had an idea to develop some simple graphics which we can use as placeholders in games to quickly test out gameplay ideas. Each tile is 12 x 12 in size and used only two colours, from a 16 colour palette. I chose a 12 x 12 size because this is a bit more detailed than the 8 x 8 tiles used in other graphic sets and this greater size allows more to be communicated to the eye when using only 2 colours per tile. These also scale better to more screen sizes than 16 x 16 tiles, which was something I was also conscious of.
The tile are more symbolic in nature and are used to show
function over form. This is so that they can be used quickly for testing out game ideas. I didn't want to get caught up in making all the variations and extra colours/detail to make the game look pretty. These are not intended as finished art (unlike Oddball and Onyx's 8x8 tile sets).
After doing some work on these I thought that other people might like to contribute. The more tiles that are done, the greater the usefulness of these. So, if anyone wants to help, please add new tiles into the free tile spaces in the image. That would be very helpful!
These are the starting tiles, I intend to add more for different themes or genres such as platform, rpg, rogue style, shooter. They are completely free to use with no restrictions or credit necessary.
And at double size to see more easily:
