I mean the fact that the unity transparent shaders (outside he cutout shaders) all have issues with z-buffering, and thus will appear on top of other objects when they're not supposed to.  I managed to find a shader someone had made that doesn't have this problem, though, so I've gotten object fading to work (it'll be in the next build).

Is it possible you are having issues with the center of the mesh causing the wrong z-order when sorted?

You have to make sure the center of the meshes allow the z-buffering to work right, tris/polys within a mesh are not sorted.

I'm not sure, but, like I said, I've found a shader that seems to work fine.

I tried out both of the test builds I found in this thread; first and foremost, this has the makings of an awesome game!

For what it's worth, I had the same trouble as these guys:
I'm having trouble gauging the distance between my ship and the obstacles.

Big, big thing for me - As objects (walls, enemies) come closer to the ship/player/screen they need to increase transparency.

To be honest, along with the walls I also find that the ship itself gets in the way of my view a lot. It helps to stick right down the bottom or right up the top of the screen, but when it's necessary to be in the middle of the screen I can't see where I'm going at all!

Was it my imagination, or were the ships in the inside test with the fans harder to hit than the ones in the forest and the desert? I don't know if they were just flying further away, but I had much more trouble taking them out.

Glad you enjoyed.  I'll be posting a new build pretty soon which'll hopefully help with some of the aiming problems.

You should make a king of racing game out of it, think snes F-zero but without the gravity that pull down on the track.

I have started a kickstarter to help support development of Flight of the Data-Thief:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1144112254/flight-of-the-data-thief

Any donation or help spreading the word would be much appreciated.

I've also released a trailer for the game:

So far I've sent off emails to gaming press sites.  Gonna post on reddit shortly.  Starfox fan sites are a good idea.

I just wanted to quickly say how awesome it is to see the number of games you put out (this is the third of yours I've seen since discovering this site). It's a struggle to find the time to finish off one project, let alone pumping out games on a regular basis...it's really inspiring to see!  Beer!
