Don't mean to clutter up the board, but I'm looking for a specific type of game.  My girlfriend loves playing Minecraft, but only the mob shooting parts - she'll farm for hours to make arrows and kill more mobs.  She'd really like a FPS, but she doesn't like all the blood and gore (me either, really).  I was wondering if there's a cartoonish FPS, preferably multiplayer, that has the same gameplay but isn't as violent or grimdark.

Metroid Prime might be a good choice, though it isn't multiplayer.

TimeSplitters is the cheeriest I can think of. I mean it's running and gunning, but you can be a gingerbread man.

There's Team Fortress 2, which is pretty cartoony, it might be bloody (maybe you can turn that off?) but it's not grimdark. It's also free to play, so there's that too, and it has a huge multiplayer.  Grin

TF2 has a "sillygibs" mode that changes all the gibs to things like gears, boots, hamburgers, etc.

Most Quaky FPSs of old let you turn off (or at worst mod away) gore. Not much to be done about the grimdarkness though.

I haven't played them myself, but it sounds like the Borderlands would be a pretty good bet.

Hah, it's obviously way out of the way to get a Wii-U, but Nintendo Land has some amazing FPS-style minigames that are totally non-gorey. The Zelda sword+archery co-op minigame is super fun, and I had a blast playing it with my non-gamer girlfriend. There's also a ninja-star throwing game that is super fun.

It's got some other great multiplayer games on there as well.

That's quite a lot to shell out for a single game though Tongue I can't wait until Rayman: Legends comes out...

Serious Sam has a "hippie mode" that changes all the blood into flowers. It's by far the best way to play it because, hey, context, and as a bonus you can change the colour mode to "psychedelic" and really do your eyes in.

These are all great suggestions.  I notice that a lot of them are Nintendo titles - they must have a policy of not too much gore/grimdark in their games.

Serious Sam might actually be good.  The violence is really goofy and doesn't take itself too seriously.  I think it might be too hard for her since her reflexes haven't been honed by years of Quake.

That Zelda archery game looks awesome.  Almost makes me want to get a Wii U just to play it.  I'll see if I can find a clone somewhere.

Reflexes aren't really necessary in SS outside of deathmatch and shooting a few homing balls of fire out of the air but you can just circle around and take 'em out whilst they re-correct their arc or just keep running backwards until they line up directly in front of you. You'll be spending a lot of time running backwards anyway so it's not really a problem. The game gets much easier in co-op so you can just keep piling people in until it's a total cake-walk even on the highest difficulty level.

Probably a bit reflex-heavy but the original Unreal Tournament has mods that can remove gore and replace blood with paint splatters. The bots have some fine AI settings as well so difficulty progression is pretty smooth and the later version added vehicles if that's more your thing.
