I stumbled upon this picture:
http://www.google.com/imgres?start=116&um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&sa=N&tbo=d&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1133&bih=680&tbm=isch&tbnid=tSqLcgVhavJQyM:&imgrefurl=http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/05/24/2355239/upscaling-retro-8-bit-pixel-art-to-vector-graphics&docid=IEz3vbgzkkn8iM&imgurl=http://i.imgur.com/sqtPI.jpg&w=619&h=776&ei=hF0hUeijO4rctAaanIEQ&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:21,s:100,i:67&iact=rc&dur=483&sig=108699203933474166824&page=7&tbnh=197&tbnw=157&ndsp=20&tx=122&ty=48

Quite interesting, and could be useful... Do you have any information about something (tool or algorithm or whatever) that could achieve a similar result?

quite nice effect yes.

In that huge url you post is this
http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/05/24/2355239/upscaling-retro-8-bit-pixel-art-to-vector-graphics

which tells me this name: Johannes Kopf

after I pput that in google I found the original article at this site

http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/kopf/pixelart/index.html

and the paper with the algorithm that that image is generated with here

http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/kopf/pixelart/paper/pixel.pdf

so yes that is some information about something.

Hmmm, I was hoping for something like a finished library or some already existing converter tool. Something that could be used right away. Have you heard of something like that by any chance?

well I have played in the past with some freeware "bmp 2 vector" convertor tools, (as Flash also has "trace bitmap") but the results arent as clear as the thing you posted .

upscaling that's done in emulators also sort of looks like the images, but it's also not as clear.

Nice find, something I'll be taking a look at when I get some time ; )

You might talk to the Gaslamp Games guys who used a similar algorithm for the smooth art upscaling in Dungeons of Dreadmor.

Unfortunately it's my experience that these sorts of algorithms are very finicky with certain art styles -- anything that has dithering or isolated pixels is unlikely to come out looking good.  I suspect the author of the paper there (which I've seen before) chose images his algorithm is relatively "good" with...

If you are in control of the art you're using as input, though, you're probably fine.

Also check out this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_art_scaling_algorithms

In particular, the HQX algorithm is really good, and there's a free C implementation available here: http://code.google.com/p/hqx/

It's a pretty reasonable implementation, I had at one point ported it to ActionScript and it worked pretty well! (Although definitely not real-time Wink )
