I can't wait for the graphics to finally get better.

if you're waiting for console graphics to become better than PC graphics you'll have to wait forever, that hasn't been the case since the 70s or something, consoles always just barely keep up with PC during the release year for each generation, and then fall behind again; if you play games for graphics then PC is best

It's the advancement of console graphics and performance that steer the industry right now so I think it's valid to be excited. You don't see many PC only titles that are pushing the envelope. At least it means no more ports with low res textures.

there are still a few AAA PC-exclusives with graphics that could not be done on any console, though -- for instance, starcraft 2

pretty sure starcraft 2 graphics can be done on a console

Sony recently announced their next generation console, the PlayStation 4, and in spectacular fashion. A well-rounded software presentation coupled with a look at the DualShock 4 showcased the new Sony system in a fantastic manner. Yet investors thing otherwise, as Sony's shares have fallen since Wednesday's announcement. Although gaming company stock usually does this after the first look at new hardware, it's worth noting Sony's US shares have fallen 2.7% at the price of $14.08.

What's even funnier is the fact that Nintendo's shares rising.

In the same time as Sony's stock hiccup, Nintendo has experience a 2% boost, selling at $11.79.

The trend is also following suit in Japan, with Nintendo gaining 1.3% in its home country and Sony dropping 1.8%. There isn't really any explanation to these stock fluctuations (nor to the stock market in general), but  it's nice to see Nintendo going in a positive financial direction for the first time in a while. Although I am disappointed Sony has fallen by a fraction, Nintendo growth is always welcome.

It'll be interesting to see how the market changes this next generation.

pretty ironic  My Word!

i wouldn't read into it much. investors and stock traders (who aren't always human these days) do some pretty crazy things sometimes.

that's why it's ironic
to be frank there is no visibility, there is too much chaos in the field, it's too unpredictable since 5 years ago

But how much of the processing power was it using? If the CPU/GPU was already maxed out, there's no use in having more RAM.

But yeah, just looking at the specs I'd say that the Crysis-at-high level that KZ shows is pretty meh.

Found an excellent overview on Reddit of everything that has been released about the PS4 so far compiled in one place:

Quote

Official Features

  • The PS4 allows people to resume games instantly upon powering on the system (no startup time) from where they were when they turned the system off. (Source)
  • All PS4 games (that aren't camera-based) should be playable remotely on Day 1 via Remote Play on the PS Vita.(Source)
  • The PS4 will allow users to play games after downloading only a small portion of the game's data.(Source)
  • Share button functionality allows for quick screenshots or video upload of gameplay as well as sharing live streams of gameplay with friends or over USTREAM.(Source)
  • The system will launch with a headset that plugs directly into the controller for more prevalent voice communication across the PSN. (Source)
  • Cross-game chat is officially supported.(Source)
  • The PS4 will not block used games. Though publishers are free to do as they wish.(Source)
  • Game prices will range from $0.99-$59.99. (Source)
  • All PS4 games will be available as digital downloads. (Source)
  • The PS4 will support Move but not the DualShock 3. (Source)
  • A PlayStation app called 'PlayStation App' is coming to Android and iOS that allows the device to act as a second screen (a la SmartGlass) as well as purchase content and have it directly downloaded to your system. (Source) It stands to reason that this will also include messaging on the go and other stuff like that.
  • The PS4 will support 4K video output but not for games.(Source)
  • The PS4 is 3D capable but it is not a focus. (Source)
  • Certain apps can run in the background of games (such as the web browser) so you can access them without having to leave the game itself. (Source)

Unsupported

  • The PS4 is not natively backwards compatible and thus cannot play PS3 games by default. However, to remedy this Sony has invested heavily in cloud gaming and hopes to have a cloud-based solution to allow for PS3 games on the PS4 as well as other devices. (Source)
  • The PS4 will not support the DualShock 3. (Source)

Missing Stuff So Far

  • The System Itself - No biggie. My guess it will be a black box with stuff in it.
  • YouTube & Twitter - They were both strangely missing for the apps page in the OS preview and USTREAM seems to be the official gameplay stream site of choice for Sony. This could mean Xbox is about to announce something big in conjunction with YouTube. (

) Still, USTREAM does support easy uploading of videos to YouTube (Source) so, as long as there is an easy way to watch YouTube, this shouldn't be a big deal.

However, despite the influx of new names the number of European studios now working on PS4 games, according to Sony, has dropped from 53 to 30.

Kain, with Halo 4 you mean releasing it now?

Yes, that is what I was referring to.

Halo is arguably Microsoft's most popular and durable exclusive brand. Pushing Halo 4's release back and porting it to their next console could have given them a popular exclusive launch title. Launching it at the tail end of 2012 instead erodes the brand somewhat, and denies them the ability to leverage the franchise for their next hardware launch. Another Halo title, or an upgraded port of Halo 4 will be too little, too late. (or in the case of a new Halo title, too soon) Annualizing franchises is good for bookkeeping, not branding. The only people you please with that kind of policy are accountants.

Sony has the option of releasing The Last Guardian as a PS4 launch title. I strongly suspect that is the reason why so little has been shown of the game for the past few years. They intend to pull an Ico with this title. The Last Guardian won't have nearly as much pull with general consumers as Halo would have. But it will likely be a critical darling, and making it a PS4 exclusive would be a powerful selling point for Sony fans.

Without Halo, what powerful exclusive franchise is Microsoft going to pitch as the reason for upgrading to it's next hardware platform? Madden and Call of Duty won't cut it, neither franchise is exclusive. Ditto for Mass Effect. Fable just doesn't have the same clout.

In this period, established IP like Halo should probably be making the most of mature tech/workflow and the existing installed base rather than waiting. New IP is a different matter though.

Yeah. There's a cost to waiting too. New studio, may not have made the game much better by waiting.

Last Guardian also has development troubles.

New IP would be the ideal solution. After all, Halo was new IP once too, and that worked out pretty well for the original XBox. But what studio is going to develop that new IP as a new Durango exclusive? Bungie isn't owned by Microsoft anymore. A lot of top-tier studios that were once in the Microsoft stable have folded or been consolidated over the past five years. The only thing I can think of is perhaps they have Rare working on something. And we all know that Rare isn't as popular as it once was. (Viva Pinata was great, but not in line with the XBox's core demographics)

Yes, I suppose it is a bit unfair for me to demand such details before Microsoft has even announced their next hardware iteration. It could be that we will see all sorts of exclusive titles when Microsoft gets around to revealing the Durango. For the time being, I do feel it significant to point out that Sony has done a better job of preserving their first-party development studios over the course of the current hardware generation. They have several studios in-house still (although they've scaled back a bit from a few years ago) - 343 Industries and Turn 10 are the two that spring to mind. 343 handles Halo and Turn 10 does Forza.

Don't know if they'd do new IP or if they'd let someone else take care of that with some kind of exclusive deal. It's also entirely possible that they've "overlooked" this little detail. It happens.
