This is really fun to watch as it goes along.
I agree with the parallax background as well. I know the assets are placeholders for now but are you going for this simplistic style in the end or you planning something more detailed?

Looks great. For an icy cavern, I think you could punch it up with some hanging icicles and a few sparkling FX on the ice blocks. Of course, I figure you're still prototyping & those are small details.

Slippery ice is a given, maybe snow particles. I did not swim up that waterfall but there will be secrets like that in the final game. Aw crap, he can shoot. So Cave Story then, not Montezuma's Revenge. I'm sorry.

It's looking good! About the last screenshot; when you lose health, hearts disappear, right? And a transparent heart represents half a heart? It would be good maybe if 'empty' hearts remained on screen, but grayed out (or something), to show the max. hp capacity at all times. What do you think?

I'm kind of taking it easy right now though I have been thinking about how I want to structure the game. I don't want to focus to much on a plot apart from the protagonists main motivations, I'd rather have the player explore a setting that is interesting. I want to structure all the rooms in a world building type of way instead of being nonsensical. The main thing being that the player has a sense of place. So I guess I will have to start sketching.
