On that note, who wants to see a gif?

I've been working on getting the base engine done before we focus on gameplay features, so menus, dialogue systems, movement, map loading etc.

This is just a demo showing us slightly further than we used to be in the old version, but with much less trouble.

Having a bit of a doodle trying to think of a new character design. We got a bit sidetracked.

A GIF a day keeps the doctor away!

PS: Revised character sprite, all new animations. Boxing man is unlikely to be in the real game. Sorry.

So, we've finished almost all the items that are going to be needed for the first area of the game - and we're going to try to complete that for a "Proof of Concept" (pardon the pun).

We're also starting to think about music for the game, we want something ambient but orchestral sounding - nothing electronic.  Gentleman

Aside from items and gameplay elements I've been working on the look of the first area (which is very dark - shocking I know).

You can see the background lighting effects I've been working on here (the bricks are only visible when you walk past). I've got a long way to go before I'm satisfied with these tiles but they're something..!

Coming up...
  • Art assets!
  • The first cutscene!
  • The last item combination!
  • More gifs?!

What will our heroes code next? Find out next time on... Proof!

You know that feeling when you say a word too many times, and it loses it's meaning? (it's called semantic satiation)

Anyway, welcome to my day...

Also; we made it to 4000 lines of code today! With no real gameplay!  Beer!

I also did this quick sketch, we're trying to nail the aesthetic of the first area of the game still.

I spent some time on the tiles today, so here are some nice pictures for everyone.

Also; a gif, because who doesn't like them?

Hah, yeah, that can be maddening. What physics engine are you using (or did you make it yourself)?

It's totally our own, it's pretty simple stuff. Just velocity, acceleration and friction - no matter how many  times I write it I can never nail stacking boxes first go haha.

Good to see you! For other people: we did a technical breakdown on the current lighting system. So have a look-sie. It is not the most realistic lighting system but it is fairly simple and easy to implement.

Screenshot Saturday Update!

We haven't made a huge amount of progress visually this week (sadly) due to University mid-semester exams being, well, today and this week. But we do still have lots of pictures to show you!

New Piston Graphics

Look at all those ambient dust particles!

I like to shake it

Dust Particles

(this is a WIP)

Sliding box

(new gameplay element!)

As we get closer and closer to having all the features of the first area done, I'm thinking more and more about the atmosphere of the game and working on the little touches. The dust particles are a good example of that, albeit an incomplete one. We actually have the entire first area's levels designed on paper, so once we think we're ready we should be able to power through that.

To encourage me to get back into exploring music, I'm going to start including a "song of the week" in my posts.

Could i send a track or two of music for you to consider to be in the game, even though you are heading up music?

Shouldn't it tilt in the opposite direction? Inertia and all?
