i was lumping mrm and 4chan into the same point. the point wasnt that theyre both equally as bad, just that theyre both idiotic groups you should distance yourself from. sorry i didnt phrase it clearly enough, didn't mean to imply that you were on their level
and just to preempt some bs about how that can't be what i meant because i wrote x, y, and z, i'm telling you right now that if it looks like that's what i meant it was unintentional, i can see how it might look like that, and it's not what i meant, sorry. (i guess this is sorta ironic, w/e)
There are a tonne of self-described "men's rights activists" who are just whiny attention whore misogynists hiding under a nobler label which they do not deserve. Just like there are a tonne of self-described "feminists" who are just whiny attention whore misandrists hiding under a nobler label which they do not deserve. There's no point in wholesale amputating the concerns or terminology of one group or the other just because of the idiot bandwagoners out for personal gain. We already have words to describe them; Bigot, sexist, and misogynist/misandrist. Hate and discrimination is unacceptable and there are no genitals which should exempt you from that rule. It's that easy. i agree with that in theory, but again, feminism was created because of injustice against women, while the MRA stuff was created as a response to feminism, and that automatically colors all of their arguments a certain way.

Some person made a PG-rated joke about a penis to another person, in private.
I'm with you for most of this, but does it really count as "in private" when you're sitting in a packed room with lots of other people within earshot? There are definitely faults to be found on both sides of this. What an icky situation. Hate and discrimination is unacceptable and there are no genitals which should exempt you from that rule. It's that easy.
Now you're talking!

If it was really in response to all feminism then that's news to me and I agree that's bad. I was under the impression it was a counter-movement against "Misandry" with a capital M which is all the rage on Tumblr right now, or to draw attention to actual injustices against men in North America (discrimination unique to gay men, social taboos about what defines "proper" masculinity, inequality in divorce court, etc.) I'm with you for most of this, but does it really count as "in private" when you're sitting in a packed room with lots of other people within earshot?
There are definitely faults to be found on both sides of this. What an icky situation. True, it would be more accurate to say "a private conversation, albeit in a public space". Frankly though even if they were involved in a conversation directly with this woman, and made a joke saying "haha this USB stick looks like a dick", sure it's stupid but how is that in any way sexist? I can't even imagine a context where that could be discriminatory.

it just creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for some people, and it's supposed to be a super inclusive event. it's against their rules, regardless. MRA stuff has been around for awhile; it's not just a tumblr / reddit thing. there are some mrm things that side with feminism, but it was definitely started in response to feminism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men%27s_rights_movement

idk dude, when i was younger and dumber i used to be kinda interested in the "men's rights" movement because i thought a specifically male perspective on gender issues might be interesting or w/e. but i discovered that the overwhelming majority of MRMs on the internet are 1. people who are reacting against feminism because they feel "threatened" by it for misguided reasons 2. outright misogynistic scumbags the problem with the men's rights movement is, as bobo says, that's it's almost completely reactionary. men's rights has very few compelling or original positions.

no solution to actual issues relevant to men's rights is in conflict with feminism so why the fuck does it always look like that
(it's because it's a community more formed around and concerned with talking about how feminism is stupid than men having any actual rights violated)

Good job, here is the free sex coupon. Turn it in at the nearest feminist. Be sure to remind her you defended her cause.

1) People married at the age of 20, and often died by the age of 50. People were virgins at marriage, and women spent their 20s tending to 3 or more children. The wife retained her beauty 15 years into the marriage, and the lack of processed junk food kept her slim even after that. This is an entirely different psychological foundation than the present urban feminist norm of a woman marrying at the age of 34 after having had 10 or more prior sexual relationships, who then promptly emerges from her svelte chrysalis in an event that can best be described as a fatocalypse. ok are you really asking me to take this shit seriously? also lol "white knights"

MRA would be valid is feminism wasn't the freeing of the individual from gender norm, which imply male, female, trangender and herma ... But no! let's be ignorant and say it is misandry!

fatocalypse That's all I got all of this, a new word to giggle at. 10 internet points to anyone who uses that word in a conversation in the next week, make it mean anything you want.
