i think if you look at the steam front page, you'll see more modern 3d games than retro 2d games, unless steam is having a special indie sale, which is rare. so i'm not sure how you can get the impression that steam caters more to retro 2d games than 3d games, considering how hard it is for an indie to get a retro 2d game on steam; they probably represent a tiny percent of all steam games as for statistics, try http://www.vgchartz.com/ -- it has sales statistics for games

Paul Eres, I had no idea sites like that even existed! Thanks for the stats! "Most successful website pitch thread on TIGS. I tip my hat to you in admiration." Not a website pitch, just thought it was cool. I went back and added that because a Google search yields "Android Aurora Tablet" not "Indie Game Console" Strange... it seems most are continuations or franchises of games. Who would of known the 3DS was selling so well I have to say I'm impressed with the TIGForums Community! This time for you netsu http://www.indiegameconsole.com/EDIT: netsu this ^ was a joke please don't take it too seriously.

yep, a lot of things aren't expected unless you check the numbers. the thing about the 3ds is that portable game systems usually sell very well compared to tv consoles. the gameboy sold better than the snes, the ds sold better than pretty much any console ever, and so on; the 3ds is just riding the coattails of the game boy and ds http://www.vgchartz.com/article/250865/top-10-in-sales-global-2012-edition/that is the top 10 selling games of 2012 (rather than just the one-day sales for today, which was what i quoted above). of those, i think only pokemon black/white 2 is a 2D retro game, and arguably new super mario bros. 2 (which is 3D in graphics but 2D in gameplay). the rest are modern 3D games

In my opinion, retro-style games are more popular with developers because they don't require the humongous teams and massive investments that first rate AAA titles do, which is specially enticing for people who want to have creative input on the final product rather than be a cog in the machine.
And even in simple games, 3D can be a massive headache.
So, maybe that's why we see so many retro-style titles?

For a lot of people the concept of "transformation matrix" is up there with "klatuu veratta niktu".

Transformation matrix can be avoided thanks to a magic spell call unity.

For motivation mate: even a college drop-out like John Carmack can handle it with his basic math skills which haven't evolved to this day. There is nothing advanced/mind-bending in it, just some linear stuff.

I know, I know, just was an example. In general, going 3d adds more complexity to any project, and for purely design-oriented developers who don't want to deal with such details (which happens to be a lot of the people who get into games just to make their idea a reality) it is a hassle. We all know how to draw on a 2d paper, so it is hardly surprising that many, even having the tools to make 3d games, prefer to stick with 2d.

you guys realize that you need transformation matrix math in 2d too, right? even just to rotate a sprite requires a transformation matrix; but in 2d engines the math behind displaying a rotated sprite is usually done for you by your engine. saying that 3d is more complex than 2d because of TM's is pretty dum because without them you wouldn't be able to rotate 2d sprites. most 3d game devs, as well as 2d game devs, don't do that math themselves

The jump from 2D to 3D is quite big. It can be a lot more complicated. But it is just that. You don't necessarily need advanced math or mind-bending comprehension to deal with it, just a detailed look at things.

you dont actually need a matrix in 2d. It's kind of moot thought since a matrix is really just an array of vectors though. 2d or 3d you are assigning a series of cos/sin functions to your inputs.
