Thanks, I appreciate it!

Current state of things -

-Jumping works pretty well, the only real issue is just the layer placement of the character, i think a simple layer = -y will solve this. but haxepunk running in neko messes up layers so I might have to tinker with it.

-Going to lower gravity a bit, if you watched my video you should see why  Embarrassed

-the mapswitch (multidimensional map thing i cant explain with words) works pretty well, ill fine tune it and add some cool effects (Blendmodes are weird... if anyone has experience with them in haxe i would appreciate any pointers)

-have an enemy fully drawn out and sprited, doodled some more stuff (yume-nikki esque blobmonsters and normal zelda-like monsters with a twist) basically every enemy has three forms, it ties into map switching. Basically, if you kill something, you can go kill its ghost, then the ghost of its ghost. Yeah...

-Going to be working this weekend on a web project with a friend so probably not as much time to update here, not that it matters much as the majority of my updates are just me working on something trivial, but right now i have some momentum and am starting to feel more comfortable with haxe's odd ends

- been working on some music, have a weird theme type thing I like. I think i will expand on it some more http://tindeck.com/listen/uuin (i love the earthbound soundfont so much)

Sorry this has been a boring devlog so far, i'll try to throw in some fun things to work on (fun for me to work on too Smiley )

The tiles feel so... tiley. It's so obvious they're tiled out. A few odd tiles, like puddles, discarded junk or chipped corners would help make the image more interesting and diverse. And they're really, really dark. They'd work if the goal is to purposely make the image hard on the eyes, but otherwise the patterns on the tiles could stand to be faded so the creatures and player stand out more.

I like the basic concept though and the monster art looks neat and freaky. I want to see it animated.

I second these thoughts on the tiles. They also feel a bit too dark to look at it, but this may have been your intentions. The monsters look fun!

I was trying to make the scene look a bit confusing and busy, its the entrance to one of the first areas of the game I have sketched out so far, a submerged museum area. The tiles do look tiley, I might work on them, or maybe ill animate them to make it even more confusing. I think making purposefully tiled tiles makes it more dreamlike-ish. I'm basically trying to make yume nikki with a loose story and a sense of progression

Looking good. I see you're using Haxe. Did you decide to go with HaxeFlixel or HaxePunk as well, or are you rolling your own engine (utilizing NME I assume)?
Trying out haxeflixel, I like it so far (i used as3 w/ flashpunk before)

Testing out new palettes, I suck at colors - i can hardly tell hue

What do you guys internet people think, left or right?





The left one looks more connected to each other and the right looks like it's made out of different tiles, so it looks more devided.
I preffer the left one.

Working more on the first area.

When I was younger my father owned a 150 or so gallon saltwater fishtank, and I would often accompany him to the fish store to buy food/accessories/whatever for the tank. I usually hung around looking at all the fish in the tanks. I felt unnerved of how the fish stores had the top of the tanks off. The bubbling noises, lights diffracting and reflecting through the tanks usually made me nauseous and uneasy. Especially when I worked my way over to the deep water fish, where the lights had to be dim it really made me nervous.


Scenes like this freaked me out, I'm not sure why I kept going, but whatever.

I hope I can recreate these feelings in this area, hopefully mainly by audio and some lighting effects
