Kiss Love Kiss

Description:

Mario and Peach.

Link and Zelda.

Tidus and Yuna.

Nearly every single video game plot in existance includes some sort of romantic relationship.  Your challenge here is to compose a love theme for a game.

Criteria:

The piece must be original, written solely for this competition.

Judging:

Your piece will be judged on:

-Compositional Quality:  How well is the piece written?  Is the melody memorable?  Are the harmonies coherent?  Does it have a solid structure?

-Production Value:  Within the scope of your chosen style/genre, is the piece recorded, sequenced, and mixed well?  Does it actually sound like something I would want to listen to?

-Does the piece work well as a love theme?  You are free to come up with any subtext you want, but the main emotion that I feel when listening to the piece should be love.

Deadline:

13th of May 2013 is the last day for submitting. The deadline expires when it's not 13th of May anywhere in the world.  However this is a friendly competition, and if you need a reasonable extension just let me know.

-The piece must be a new track made for this challenge.
-You will post your piece HERE, in the official challenge thread.
-Other participants will listen to your piece. You will listen to other participants' pieces. Critique will be had.
-Three runner-ups will be chosen by me.
-A winner from amongst the three will be chosen by votes on the forum, in a new FINALS thread (with awesome voting tech and all).
-The winner will host the next challenge.

Cool theme. I'll try making something this time. Surely it will come to me naturally since I'm a pretty romantic guy.

Pondering whether I should make something more moody or a piece with a straight forward melody like:

My entry:

http://soundcloud.com/moromis/amor-omnes-vincit

An improv piece that went for feeling more than structure (in the sense of recurring elements and the like), somewhat contrary to the first two judging criteria. It's a good bit of improv for the time it took.

edit:
Mr. Parrish noticed it was the wrong link, and I updated my post. Apparently when you copy the link out of Ableton it's your home page? I dunno. (you can delete your post if you'd like, Zach)

My submission for this challenge.
https://soundcloud.com/simplykept/one-last-kiss-goodbye
"One Last Kiss Goodbye" is the name of the piece. A bit cheesy. Wink
Hope you like it.

I'm really happy with what I got so far. It's going to be more of a joyous and euphoric love song.

It's a gentlemany thing I do, not really for any reason. As for Ableton, I believe it's a new feature as of 9, but I heard about it back in 8 (which I didn't have). And I confirmed that it does indeed just give you a link to your home Soundcloud page. It is handy though. Smiley

I love the soft chaos you got going there. Feels like a summer breeze. Love can definitely be that too. Smiley

On the constructive side of things, the string-like pad in the back ground feels a bit too agitated for the vibe of the track. If its notes could only fade in the same way they fade out, instead of starting with such a harsh attack, it would add a lot to the track in my honest opinion.

And the ending. Why not a small fade out? The sudden drop seems out of place for this track.

All of these remarks are about the small details. The overall vibe is great.

Well thanks. I imagined a warm summer day spent with a lover, so that's cool that that came across. As for the other things, I had to get to dinner. Grin
I'll look into the strings though. I didn't notice that.

That's cool.  Sonar has a publish to web feature but I have no idea exactly what it does because my PC isn't connected to the net so it doesn't serve much purpose to me. Smiley

Thats smart.  If I had a second computer for composing, I would try to do that

Hullo fellow composers! Beer!

My little entry's as ready as can be!

Warning for lactose-intolerant listeners: contains large amounts of cheese.

My entry is almost done but I'm kind of stuck. I need to get better at structure.

I feel you.
Needed three or four attempts to arrange my entry, and it ended up being a pretty short piece.

Coming up with a good structure from thin air is one of the hardest things about these challenges since there's not much setting, story or gameplay for orientation.
Maybe check out a few references to get a better grasp of how you want to tackle your track and to kinda make up your own world where your music is supposed to be playing. Keep at it!

Cheers,
Moritz
