WHIP IT! - Morty's Revenge is a very simple puzzle platformer inspired by early Gameboy games that had very limited sprite animations, physics, color palette, and crappy controls. I'm an extremely novice game developer, currently relying on Game Maker 8 to learn the basics of level design, game mechanics, while also learning actual low level programming (C++, Assembly). The practical idea behind WHIP IT! - Morty's Revenge, was to set limitations on the scope of an early game development project so I could focus more on level design, and using a few core gameplay elements to create an enjoyable, and hopefully long lasting gameplay experience. The final version will have at least 100 levels and a horde mode. The player will take the role of Morty, who wields a whip that can be frozen and set on fire, as well as bombs and holy water to help manipulate the environment and reach his ultimate goal to escape the dungeon he has been imprisoned in. Thanks to tigsource for creating this wonderful community to help noob indie developers such as myself get the word about our crappy games and get feedback from other like minded individuals! :D

I hope to have a playable HORDE MODE and some very basic levels for everyone to test out in a week or so! :D
Thanks for your time!

This looks nice, but I'm not so keen on the colours to be honest.

awww shucks Yeah, it's me... and yeah, I'm heading full bore into game development the same way I was when I first started the pedal business... so hopefully I can leave a similar mark on the gaming world. This looks nice, but I'm not so keen on the colours to be honest.
You do realize they are the original Gameboy color palette, no? ... and thanks.

You do realize they are the original Gameboy color palette, no? Yep, but that doesn't mean I have to like them. Ha ha. Good point. Then again, I think one of the reasons I chose it, is partly to illicit that same level of nostalgic frustration from older gameboy games... seeing as I'm such a noob developer and it's more than likely not going to have the best controls or smoothest gameplay... lalz. Good news though... this is actually kinda a retro-remake of a better looking version of WHIP IT! which I was only ever able to get a HORDE MODE out for... http://gamejolt.com/games/arcade/whip-it-v1/13788/My plan is to eventually go back and do a proper full color, more action-adventure oriented version of WHIP IT! ... but once again, for now I'm just focusing on getting a finished game out... and for now, this be what it be.

I like the color palette, guess I'm not the only one. But there is no right or wrong, you can focus on the "realness" of the "emulation" and some people prefer that or expand the limits of the original gameboy and some people will prefer that.

Full video here > Finally getting some enemies in here. After I get more of this fire interaction fixed up (I'm sure there will be LOTS of debugging with all the various environmental interactions)... I'll be moving on to getting the ICE WHIP to freeze the enemies into movable blocks!

The mechanics you have so far can create some pretty interesting level designs, I'm excited to see more as this game grows. Those ice block sprites are great looking by the way, keep up the good work!

I appreciate it! :D That was definitely the idea... I wanted a few key elements that could be used to create at the very least 100 really fun, but relatively challenging levels. I'm also considering opening up level design to the public to some degree, or figuring out a way to create a level editor. Half the fun is creating the puzzles! :D

100 is a lot of levels... having some public level designs might ease some of that workload!

This is cool, I'm keeping an eye on it for sure. I am a sucker for fake original GB graphics. Also, you make guitar pedals? That's dope

Nifty level designs so far. J-Snake's gonna love you, it's a lot like TrapThem.
And I grew up on old-brick GameBoy, too... remember how linear those physics were?

Thanks. Ha ha. Who is J-Snake? Got a link to TrapThem? It's actually funny... I'm not usually that much into puzzle platformers. The one that keeps coming to mind is Adventures of Lolo and good goddess were those puzzles frustrating! Got any gameboy era suggestions? I'm actually pretty inexperienced with the platform to be quite honest... beyond like... Metroid 2, Tetris, The Final Fantasy Legend... :/

PORTALS! full video here > Updated to 20% completion! Gotta do some more tweaks, flesh out the HOLY BLOCK interactions... and a few more little game mechanics... then it's all about level design and polish!

The variations of the blocks are really going to keep the gameplay interesting in this, the portals look great!
