Beard styles and old age versions.

Edit: I need to add a wardrobe to the game that allows you to customize painters and maybe add bonus items (a hat that gives +5 skill for example).

Maybe to a degree. Right now I'm thinking clothes and hats could be. Perhaps the master painter's hat or clothes drop when they die, and you can give them to another painter for bonus skill and/or trait. For every master that dies wearing them, these items gain additional "legacy" bonus.

Note to self: the stat for beards should be "growth potential". So it starts small at age 20 and can get bigger at 30 and 40. At 50 it turns gray with the hair. I should probably get matching beard and hair colors (brown, red, blond) so it doesn't look weird.

Looks great! I'm a bit worried that it might be hard to recognize your painters if hair, beard, hat and clothes can change. But when playing, it might not be an issue.
Don't forget to add a chance for growing bald with gray beard.

Regarding price: I think keeping under $15 is probably wise. Maybe even $9.99 but no lower. When I look at steam prices, it makes no difference to me, if the game is $7, $8, $9 or $10.
$10 is an insta-buy, $15 is maybe add to wishlist and wait for the next sale.

Clothes may give bonus to reputation (fancy clothes ---> more reputation because you don't look like a poor man and you are more accepted by rich people who commision paintings?)

Also, I don't know how much realism you want to put in the game, but personally I would consider strange that I get better at painting only because I get my master's clothes :D
Also consider that fashion changes in the years (wouldn't you feel a bit ridicolous if you were dressed like your granpa?)  Tongue
Maybe master's clothes can be sold for money to some kind of collector.

I love hats, but I'm not too fond of them increasing the painter's skill. I think the dynamic of spending time and money to improve painter X is more appealing than skill-increasing clothing.

I would just leave this out of the game and focus on other stuff like making different painting styles more relevant to the gameplay. But that's just me, I'm down with everything you've done so far.  Smiley

I understand the sentiment about hats. But the thing is, you're gonna be able to stack hats on top of hats, and pay real money for better hats. I joke.

There is a reason, though. I want painters to leave something behind after they die. Tombstones are morbid and the game would quickly look like Cemetary Manager (that's actually a cool game idea), so leaving hats behind would be a nice workaround. You give the old master's hat to a new apprentice and he feels more confident in his abilities. It will be a small bonus, the point is more to create memory hooks. 200 years later, the player will pick up that hat and read "Jacobello's Hat" and remember the old master he had and the moments with him.

Thanks for the helpful comments Playaction, crodo and Gaeb.

You bought me into the idea. But what if the skill bonus comes directly from the owner's doings? As in, Jacobello painted like a bad-ass and wore this pink fluffy hat. He becomes famous, becomes a master, dies. The player picks up the hat and sees that shitty hat now gives +5 skill/inspiration to the painter wearing it, BECAUSE it was the hat that Jacobello wore. Much like that idea about the masterpiece of an artist giving inspiration bonuses for people painting on tiles adjacent to the painting.

Yeah, that's the idea.

Brown beards are now implemented using the awesomely-named "CalculateBeard" function.

I uploaded a .jpg this time in the name of extension equality, down with .png domination and the gifiarchy!

I really like the hat idea. I think you should be able to change your clothes. Maybe have a few clothing styles to choose from that you can buy with in-game money. Just offers more customization. There should already be clothes on the painter when you get the painter, but you can change it if you want to. You could have your painter wearing fancy clothes or other clothing styles.

Gray hair and beards are in. I'm applying a filter instead of changing sprites, and I'm thinking of using filters for the colors as well.

I think it will be easier than creating a bunch of sprites and dealing with them.

Also, a mock review by Gaeb in portuguese (sorry):
Quote
Jogo bonitinho. Achei fofinho o jogo. 2/10

Contamination is working now too. I'm not sure about random illness, I think it's realistic but the player might be too pissed. It's kinda unfair gameplay-wise. Right now illness only happens if you overwork your painters. Let me know if you lurkers have any opinions on this.

You can try to prevent death.

I'm not sure if this specific event will be going to the countryside. Now that I think about it, I think the solution here would be to hire a doctor. Resting should be a solution for when illness has just begun, not for this stage.

Will have to read about medicine in the Renaissance.

New furniture! Light desk and dark desk.

First one changes the style of your painters towards light (cangiante). Second changes it towards dark (tenebrism).

How do light and dark attributes change the game? Can you perform forbidden rituals to curse your rivals? ^^

No. It only changes the painting style of artists.

Bug? Feature? You decide.

But it's a bug.

Empty slots now appear when you expand the guild.

You can click these slots to hire artists.

Might be a bit confusing without the rest of the image.
