Why would I do this, you ask? Because I love IRKALLA's art style, and I wanted to see if I could match it, even roughly. Also, because it's awesome, and we need some brain bleach from that wench/wrench picture. Keep up the good work, Skydsgaard! That's amazing!

Amazing. Loving the Chromehounds influence. It's a shame they'll probably never make a sequel due to it not being that popular. It had so much potential though, and took the next step in mech games with the full body shape customization. A few balance and gameplay tweaks would have made it the perfect mech game. A damn shame indeed.

Glad you guys like it... I'm just aping the original artwork, though. :D Here's a version without the shadows - closer to the original pixels: And an effort to match the original pixel scaling... it's nowhere near perfect. IRKALLA RTS? >>EDIT<< And since I can't apparently stop fiddling with this, an explosion using Skydsgaard's cubical smoke effect, which I tried to duplicate. I have to stop this. I'm so sorry.

@ANty Thanks! Is it just me, or is someone else doing the blast sound with the mouth every time you see it? My favourite moment when doing games is when you get something so awesome on screen that you just subconsciously start making sound effects with your mouth and only catch yourself after a while. That's when you know that you did something pretty cool. Anyway, the graphics and animation look great, good luck with it!

@chevkoch Ok ok, I finally got something that can work for both of us (and to be honest, after having achieved this, the old version looks flat. I really really see your point, it doesn´t match at all xD I don’t like it anymore). Thank you again! Oh, what have I done? Love the new version. The shadow on the vent as the smoke is passing it by, neat. Now the smoke seems to vanish on an inwardly curved trajectory even (slightly turning towards the mech as it dissolves), that looks sweet!

It's actually pretty simple - all you have to do is make a regular Standard material, put a Falloff material in the diffuse slot, and set the "Falloff Type" to "Shadow/Light". Then you stair-step the Mix-Curve like so: Then just set the Self-illum to 99%. To blend between your two textures, just drop them in the two slots of the falloff. Just make sure shadows are on, and this should work great! (One downside, it doesn't work with colored lights, so if you're trying to remake Mike Mignola's fantastic art style this way, it's not going to work. ) ALTERNATIVELY: Just download the mech.max file. I've got an archive with the mech in MAX 2014/2011 format. http://www.hedfiles.net/irkalla_mech.zip <<<<<YAY! You'll only need one plug in: http://www.ddag.org/f-Edge/f-Edge106.zipWhich I used to auto-call out the hard edges, as to save myself the tedium of uv'ing and painting them. Lazy! I'M SO SORRY I KEEP HIJACKING THIS THREAD.

Thanks for sharing :D ingenious stuff. As to high jacking threads: Irkalla has this effect on people these boys are just hitting the zeitgeist with what they are doing. Irkalla is what brought me to this community! It's just such an inspiring aesthetic.
