If only nintendo weren't so shitty to indie devs :/ 3DS version could be suh-weet.

fez's 3D is a parallel projection which eliminates depth. Stereo 3D and parallel projection don't mix.

3D would ruin the illusion unless it was only when turning, which would cause an awkward shift when changing from 2D to 3D.

Fez didn't always use orthographic projection for everything. Take a look at the original demo level.

Note that I said could. You could very likely ease in and ease out the stereo rendering in software for the turns. Fez just reminds me of the kind of game I used to enjoy on gameboy is all. Didn't mean to brush people the wrong way.

sure you could do it on turns, but in the most recent footage the turns look way faster than the original "omg 3D!" video, and it seems like it'd just be jarring to go to a perspective/stereo view and back within a half-second (?) turn ... dunno though. Agree it would be nice to play something like it on a handheld though

After toying around with a 3DS recently I was surprised at how comfortable the 3D was. The turning speed could be an issue though, very true.

Isometric projection doesn't mean there's no way to preserve depth information. The world is 3D, it's the projection transformation that strips out Z. If you keep track of it in the shader or do your own projection, you can do neat stuff with it.
Aaaaaand that's all I'm going to say on that subject.

Obviously you can track the z and do shading tricks with any projection, but the visual effect of stereo 3D specifically relies on a non-parallel projection. (though hmm, could perhaps be emulated by rotating two nearby orthographic projections inward towards each other ... no idea how it would look since it doesn't match the eyes anymore, but ... maybe? if I get some time later I will make a toy to test that.)
anyway, interesting that you used the specific term isometric projection instead of orthographic projection, fez appears to be only rarely isometric ...

Bigpants' The Depths To Which I Sink (which was at Indiecade just now) is 2D/isometric and has proper stereoscopy. So there's ways! Isometric is just the general case of orthographic, as far as I know. Orthographic projection being axis-aligned isometric projection.

Oh, nice -- so it does work after all, cool!
Isometric is a special case of orthographic projection of a box-like object, in which the three axes are equally foreshortened and are each 120 degrees apart. You're probably thinking of parallel projection.
