Thought it was time I started a devlog of a new football game I'm developing called Tiki Taka Soccer.

Whats the game?

Tiki Taka Soccer is a 2D football game for iPad and Android tablets. The game engine and control's are specifically designed for touchscreen. So that means no bluetooth controllers, on-screen joy-pads or tilt.

Art style

Visually Tiki Taka Soccer uses pixel-art. The combination of small pixel-art sprites and a zoomed out camera (even further zoomed out then the classic Sensible Soccer) compliments the controls as you can see nearly the whole pitch. Planning moves and spotting runs of players is really easy.

The game

We love New Star Soccer and the Kairosoft games so in Tiki Taka the focus is on a player-manager career which provides a RPG style hook to accompany the footy action.

You take on the role as player-manager and start with a crappy team. The aim to take them to the top of club football. You play the matches and also manage the team focusing on the fun stuff -  team selection, tactics and every match you earn cash (more if you win and score goals) which can be used to buy better players.

As well as earning cash each match you as as player-manager gain experience. This can be used to improve your manager abilities. These abilities then directly impact your team. For instance if you improve your fitness training ability your players will recover from matches quicker.

Also at higher levels the abilities give you one-use-per-season powers. Using fitness again as an example - level up enough and you gain access to the 'faith healer power' which can be used to instantly heal an injured player.

There's also a random element to each season - we generate positive and negative incidents alongside your fixtures. They fit into a number of categories (such as injuries, media, financial) and again effect you, your team or the opposition. These will be based on the crazy world of football so imagine players doing stupid things (fireworks, drinking, gambling etc) to managers (bungs, affairs etc) and everything in between.

Ideally these incidents will be updated regularly to reflect real life situations that take place in football but we shall see.

So far

That's about it really, currently in the final stages of finishing up a quick match demo build which allows you to play as two teams and is a demo of the controls and game engine. This demo will be released for free on the app store and will launch alongside a Kickstarter to fund the rest of the game.

Videos

Created a little teaser trailer and a demo vid of the controls as they quite hard to imagine when I describe them!

Will keep this updated as things progress and thanks for reading this far Toast Right

Here's a larger version of the Lisbon Academy stadium. This is where the quick match demo takes place, based on the Sporting Lisbon training pitch...

I love the look of this; personally it really evokes nostalgia for Dino Dino Soccer etc. If I had a tablet this would definitely be on my wish list. Best of luck with the Kickstarter!

Quick update to show off a UI screens from the player-manager area.

Career overview screen

This screen acts as a hub overview of your team's progress (and your own progress!) Manager abilities in the top left, current first team details bottom left which displays fatigue and skill levels.

On the right you can flick between the current league table and upcoming fixtures/incident's. Incidents are randomly generated positive and negative events based on the crazy world of club football and provide a randomness to your current season.

An update to mention the incidents which take place in Tiki Taka Soccer as you managing your team.

Not only do we generate fixtures at the start of a season we also generate incidents. These can be both positive and negative and aim to reflect the craziness of real football taking in media scandals, injuries, corruption, money, relationships, player mentality and your own well being!

Here we have a mock-up of a media type incident.

One of your players has been caught by the press behaving badly and the incident causes a negative effect on the players fitness but a positive effect on the players morale. This will directly effect your team if you decide to use the player in the next match.

Also as a manager you can earn abilities that will negate the effects of incidents but that's another update.  Beer!

Quick update to try and highlight the abilities you earn RPG style as a player-manager.

When you win matches in Tiki Taka Soccer as well as earning cash to buy better players you also gain experience which in traditional RPG style allow you to level up and earn abilities.

These abilities encompass fitness, technical, financial, tactical and morale based paths. They provide passive boosts and at later stages single use (per season) specialties. These can provide the initiative to your team during a lack luster season.

As an example here's a look at the fitness and financial ability paths:

Fitness training provides a passive boost to the recovery of your players after every match and the special abilities can heal injured players.

Financial training provides you with greater earning potential per match and the special abilities can allow discounts on players transfers.
