EDGAR is an adventure sidescroller/lootfest that we are working on, set in a historically inaccurate Victorian London. Also, as you may have already guessed, the main character is the father of Gothic poetry himself, Edgar Allan Poe.

The story, which is a big part of the game, starts off with Poe in search of his beautiful wife. He believes that she was taken by Jack the Ripper and sets off on a journey to find him and rescue her.

Our artist has created a very nice pixel art style for the game and the aesthetic is important to us because loot is a large focus during the game. There is a lot of loot to be found and we're designing the equipment and programming the drops in a way that gets you, as the player, excited every time you discover something new.

Poe's adventure will take him through some of the greatest pieces of Victorian literature, and he will face many famous characters, including Dracula (shown here), Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde, and dozens more.

He will also visit real, historical places, like the 1851 World's Fair.

Once the game is released, you can look forward to things like 2 player local and online co-op, where Jules Verne can join in on the fight as well as silent seasonal updates to add more content over time.

As a small taste of what's to come, we have

to whet your appetite.

Also, if you want to follow the project, we'll be posting more here periodically and hopefully getting some feedback from everyone here. There are also some exciting announcements coming soon so keep an eye on our website (link in the signature).com/FNbnsFb.gif[/img]

Thanks for reading and we'll be around to chat and keep you informed. Now, to leave you with a quote:

Here is a quick update on EDGAR, our adventure sidescroller/lootfest starring Edgar Allan Poe!

We've really honed in our story and have started creating our cast of characters. Only a select few are shown above.

Our inventory screen is fully implemented and working in game. Here you can organize, learn about, and equip all the items gathered throughout the journey.

We've also been working on the in-game companions that will follow and (sometimes) assist you. Some of these are rewards for our upcoming Kickstarter campaign.

As always, we're generating more and more loot for gameplay variety and player customization.

We also decided that when the player equips a complete set of loot, they unlock a special ability. Here you can see that equipping the Druid set...

...allows Poe to turn into a Direwolf for a few seconds!

Clothes aren't the only items we've been creating, here you can see some of the gun variety you will find in the game. Not only is every gun unique as far as stats are concerned (with many randomized), but there are various gun lines, made by different famous inventors. Each line has unique characteristics, like Perkins which can penetrate multiple enemies and Joule which can set them on fire.

So where are we now? We're working on some of our early levels, creating large maps with a fair amount of detail, just so we can actually get in and start playtesting them. Everything is layered so we can tweak things as needed.

That doesn't mean we're ignoring our later levels, however, and we're continuing to let our imagination run wild on mysterious settings and bizarre creatures.

We're also implementing dialogue so that we can sprinkle bits and pieces of the story throughout the levels.

There will be more updates coming very soon with a video of some game mechanics and announcements are coming soon as well.

We're excited to hear from you and to answer any questions (as long as the answer isn't super secret) so please feel free to hit us up on Twitter, ask us questions here, or just get in contact with us via our email on the website. Thanks!

It's a metroidvania to some extent, especially in regards to returning to early areas with new abilities in order to reach new areas. Combat feels a little similar as well, but there is more of an emphasis on learning what works and what doesn't with every new enemy.

Thanks for the interest!

As mentioned above, we've been working on our Raven companions the past few days. The companions currently fly behind the player, speeding off to grab ink, whiskey, or coins for the player. Not only does this allow things to be collected from hard to reach or impossible to reach locations, but it also means that during battle, Poe will have a somewhat larger supply of replenishing items coming his way. Eventually there will be different animals all together, of flying and grounded variety.

The differences between the ravens are purely cosmetic, though we have trails and particle effects to make the differences greater. Some of the ravens, like the Diamond Raven and the Steam-Powered Raven (shown below) will be Kickstarter exclusive, so we're staying away from stat changes to prevent unfair advantages.

Not all ravens are friendly, however, and there is even a mini-boss being developed that will use them in a darker, more magical, fashion.

Thanks for reading!

Today we’d like to talk a bit about the in-game journal in EDGAR.

When we set out to make this game, one of the most important things for us was that the game be able to serve as a launching point for exploring the literature, people, places, and themes of the Victorian Era. To that end, we are implementing an in game journal that players can use to dive into the world.

The least spoilerific screenshot we could get

Early in the adventure Poe comes across a mysterious, magical book with the ability to generate new entries about the beings that Poe encounters and the events that transpire. So after defeating a new enemy type for the first time, or after initiating a conversation with a character, a notification will drop down on screen, letting the player know the journal has been updated. These notifications can be turned off if desired, however, the unread entries will still be marked as “NEW” within the journal until they’ve been viewed.

Optional dropdown notification.

What we are most excited about, in all this, is that we will be mixing both fact and fiction indiscriminately throughout the entries. One entry may talk about the behavioral patterns of gargoyles while another talks about Lewis Carroll’s passion for photography. The blend continues down into individual entries even, as the stories of real people and places are twisted into alternate, pseudo-accurate tales. Not only will this add some coherence and “believably” (as far as fantasy stories are concerned) to our world, but it will hopefully instill a sense of wonder and curiosity within players that leads to them going out and learning more on their own.

Ultimately, the journal serves as just another way to expand the alternative world of our game, and how far players dive into it is completely up to them. We are just doing our part to make sure there’s good stuff waiting for those who want it.

Back in May, we posted some news about our weapons on the devlog and I wanted to bring that here for anyone who hasn't followed along in the past.

Something for Every Occasion

All of the guns in EDGAR are the handiwork of at least one Victorian inventor. Some may be unidentified if the origin is mysterious, but in general, every weapon will have an inventor associated with it. Each inventor creates guns with their own aesthetic, stat ranges, and even special bonuses.

In order to establish backgrounds for these “designer weapons”, we’ve started looking into the lives some of the era’s most brilliant minds. Sprinkled throughout our imaginary stories, will be facts and half truths. People who actually interacted will team up to make weapons, organizations who actually existed will be have secret, shadowy actions. The most important part about telling a lie is putting just enough truth in it to make it believable. I don’t pretend that our stories are believable, but they straddle the line between real and imagination, which is a quite interesting place to be.

In the journal section of the game (which we mentioned in our last post here), players will be able to go read about the various characters, locations, and stories they’ve already encountered.

There are a few examples of the journal entries you might see while playing EDGAR, and in order to prevent this post from just being a straight up copy/paste job, I'll give you the option of hopping over there and reading the post from May 2nd.

I have a quick favor to ask: If you would like to see more of the older updates brought to this devblog, please let us know. We aren't sure if we should be copying all the old (but exciting!) updates from the past here, or if you guys are already up-to-date. Thanks for the feedback.

A quick update on the latest animation for our good friend Poe. What kind of game would EDGAR be if you couldn't do a sweet ass roll?

Scaled up a bit for your pleasure

We're still hoping for some feedback from you folks.
Would you like us to put previous updates in this thread for those of you who haven't seen them all yet?

Until next time,  Gentleman

I love the style you are going for.

Two questions, though:
1-What's the gameplay going to be? Castlevania style? or something more quiet?
2-How big is your team?

I will be looking forward to more updates!.

1-Hmm, not quite sure what more quiet gameplay would be, but yes, it is similar to Castlevania. You'll have one melee and one ranged weapon on hand at all times, with abilities unlocked as the story progresses.

2-And we have a team of seven people.

Thanks for your interest!

We have a little bit more sexiness for you because the guy who does our animations is a boss and is pumping out some great stuff. I give you... death.

Since we haven't heard any responses about posting earlier updates here from our wordpress devlog, we might start sprinkling them here and there.

We hope you enjoy. Cheers
