I recall, about 5 years ago, spending a year working my way through every available MAME shmup. Afterwards I composed a list of my 25 favourite shmups.
I shall attempt to do this as well :D I wonder how long it will take me.

Two quality shmups I've come across recently that aren't usually mentioned in best-of lists and recommendations are Vasara and Shienryu.

Really enjoying these shmups right now.

I'm all about that Gunbird 2. It's so good, and so fast. I love the way Armed Police Batrider looks, sounds, and feels. I just don't get how to play it.

Yup, Gunbird 2 is pretty great.

Armed Police Batrider is really fun and has very deep gameplay; but my problem with it, which is also my problem with another Raizing game - Battle Garegga - is that the bullets are not as visible as I would want them to be.

It happens too often that I die in the game and would have no idea what hit me.

"They Came From Verminest" ship comes in Vortex Attack which is a game we totally recommend and also includes ships from other famous shmups.

I have always been a huge fan of the Thunder Force and Raiden series. As a game developer I have produce only shmups so far, with a lot of inspiration coming from the gameplay -- what really matters to me -- found within those series.

It would be cool if TIGSource had a listing of all DevLogs and whatnot of shmups being made on these forums. I bet there are some gems hidden away here that could maybe use some support from fans of the genre.
