I can't get enough of the pixel art on this project. The color environments are so gorgeous and readable, even with so much content moving on the screen at once. Big fan of the first one, really looking forward to the second!

Hello again!

Wow, it's amazing how much work it is trying to keep up with and promote your Kickstarter. (http://kck.st/HtWsRl)

I've been wanting to post much more here but time is just speeding by and time for such things as sleeping and eating are decreasing significantly. Tongue  I will take a moment today to put our most recent dino reveal/feature and something very special after that..

So, without further ado: The Pachycephalosaurus!

The Pachy is a versatile dino, something of a well-rounded powerhouse in a smaller package. At 1000 pounds, he sits between the roles of the raptor and triceratops. His hard bone helmet lets him Charge to knock back and stun dinos, crush stone, and topple trees.

He may not have quite the triceratops' destructive ability, but he is far more maneuverable and able to fit into smaller spaces. This combination of traits will allow him to bash his way into hidden tunnels no other dino can reach. A jack of all trades, he doesn't have much of a weakness to speak of!

This earthen wall is no match for the Pachy! Super Egg acquired!

 Here he is running:

Here's the Pachycephalosaurus hitching a ride on a large pterosaur!

Finally, we'll leave you with some concept sketches for the feature image on top, by illustrator Emily Lubanko:

Thanks for looking! We hope you're as excited as we are to smash some stone and dino skulls in Dino Run 2!

If you like what we're doing, please share this post with your friends and make this project happen! We've made it so easy, just click on this: http://pixeljam.com/share

Hello again.  Rich From Pixeljam back with another Dino Run 2 related update.

Brand new to the Dino Run Universe, it's our Dino Run Indie Collection!

With the blessing of these indie developers, players can run and play wearing any of these hats & colors. They will appear in Dino Run 2, Dino Run SE for Steam (March 2014) and Dino Run for iOS (?). That's going to be fun, and there will be more to come. Thanks to all the excellent indie developers who are a part of this. We're very excited about this collection.

As for the Dino Run 2 & the Kickstarter (http://kck.st/HtWsRl), 10 days left to go and it's at about 25% funding. We know it's looking challenged, but it's also still very  possible to reach our goal if we can find ways to expose the project to much larger audiences.  We're also very open to any and all help in that area.  Anyone know any celebrities that might have been Dino Run fans back in the day & might like to tweet about it? Any popular youtubers that might be up for playing some Dino Run SE right about now?  We've got promo codes to share.

We're also working hard on another mock-gameplay video for the modern day. And we'll be announcing a couple more awesome playable dinos that we've got planned for the game.

Amazingly, the original Dino Run (http://pixeljam.com/dinorun/) was played literally nearly 90 million times since 2007!  The multiplayer  community has stayed alive and kept it relevant into the present & the game is continuing to be discovered and enjoyed by players and new fans. we're pretty sure most of those fans are younger kids though, and likely not able to back a kickstarter project..

We know the Dino Run universe is something special and we get enough feedback and fan love to know that it is loved and warms hearts. And we are also certain that our vision for Dino Run 2 would be incredibly satisfying and fun if we can afford to develop it. With the love and care, creativity of the team and 7 years of game making experience we have to put into it, we are confident it will be epic, fresh and beautiful, and demolish all expectations.  Smiley

If you feel like supporting or sharing our Dino Run 2 kickstarter, we made this page to make it easy: http://pixeljam.com/share

Thanks for reading!

Best wishes,
-Rich

It looks like the kickstarter isn't going to reach its goal Sad. Does this mean dino run 2 will not be made?

It's time to post the next playable Dino reveal for Dino Run 2:  The Velociraptor!

Of course the velociraptor!  How could it not be the velociraptor?? This lovable guy is back for some more extinction-escaping action. Smiley Well, you know, potentially...

In Dino Run 2, the Raptor is pure speed, plain and simple. With top tier stats in acceleration and top speed coupled with his small size and special ability he can run circles around bigger, clumsy dinos. However, at 30 lbs, a blow from a heavier dino will send him spinning. He'll need to rely on his agility to evade the multitude of dangers throughout the eras.

The Raptor's classic special ability, Super Speed Boost, is back with a few changes: For a very short amount of time, the raptor can zoom ahead with a huge burst of energy. Once used, this ability will need to cool down for a while, so it must be used at the right moment.  The raptor is also a carnivore and can gobble up other critters, dinos and people for even more speed!  Fun!

Here's a pack of raptors contributing to the dino mayhem downtown:

You may have seen our Indie collection feature last week. It's a HUGE selection of raptor hats, heads, and masks based on characters from our favorite independent games to be added to the already outrageous number of hats available from classic Dino Run! the current selection is below but more are in the works.

Finally, I'll leave you with some concept sketches for the feature image on top, by Emily Lubanko:

And finally, we have a very special update for you! We are revealing TWO new playable species planned for Dino Run 2: The Stegosaurus and the Carnotaurus!

They're very happy to see you for completely unrelated reasons!

The Stegosaurus may not be the fastest, strongest, or smartest dino, but you cannot deny he has style.  We've added the Stego for our expert players who want an even greater challenge.  If you can make it with this guy, you're a survival master!  He is not without his tricks, however.  He's got a strong spiked club tail that can send other dinos spinning.  Also, it is a highly scientific fact that Stegosaurus roll up into a deadly Stegoball when threatened or to expedite hill-based travel:

FIG A: STEGOBALL

The Carnotaurus is an incredibly specialized predator.  From his stubby arms, powerful legs and piranha-like jaw you can make a few assumptions about what he's good at: Running and Devouring prey.  Sometimes at the same time!  Eating other dinos will slow him down a bit, but their nutrients will then provide him with a massive speed boost. What he can't swallow whole, he'll take a good chunk out of.  There isn't much Carnotaurus can't defeat!  Careful though, he's a wild beast and he's a little hard to control!

Fig. B: NOMS

Check these guys out!:

Hi TigForums,

Rich Grillotti here with (perhaps) a final update on Dino Run 2!

First, here is a beautiful image of "The Herd" by Jeffrey Nielson.  Or as I like to call it, "The March of the Sauropods".

While Dino Run 2 did not meet its funding goal (although it did make it to a respectable $83,000+ in the end), I wanted to express a deep and heartfelt Thank You to everyone who backed the Kickstarter and supported our vision for Dino Run 2.

We're so glad to have reached so many people with our dream project, to see the appreciation and support for what we were trying to do, and also that we were able to be examples of a team who refused to give up until the outcome was 100% certain. We believe/know miracles are possible and it felt good publicly be those folks refusing to cave under the pressure of negative thinking, depressed moments, & discouraging feedback. It taught me a lot about the difference between letting go of attachment, & and giving up. (the former as a stress-free way to live life, the latter as a self defeating & actually arrogant attitude..)

Of course, Dino Run 's Kickstarter didn't succeed after all in the way we had hoped, but still, we're glad to have had the experience and been tested in this way.  While we really would love for Dino Run 2 to exist, we can't argue with life as it actually is, and can trust that it's for the best at this time. It was a successful endeavor in many other ways.

For now our dinos are hibernating safely, deep in a hidden sanctuary until atmospheric conditions are right for their re-emergence. We will most definitely let you all know if-and-when that may be..

So, now we’re going to focus our efforts on finishing Glorkian Warrior: Trials of Glork with James Kochalka (http://www.glorkianwarrior.com) very soon, bringing a nicely updated version of Dino Run SE (http://www.pixeljam.com/dinorunse) to Steam, and also bringing Potatoman Seeks the Troof (http://www.pixeljam.com/potatoman) to Steam, which was just Greenlit last week. Smiley

I've enjoyed having the TigForums to write about what we've been up to on the project, and echo some of what was being posted elsewhere.  I don't know if people actually have been reading these beyond seeing a few comments, but nonetheless, I'm glad to be here doing it.

As always, it’a an honor and a pleasure to exist as Pixeljam and do what we do, and are happy that there are so many people out there that like it too.

With Love,

Rich & the rest of the Pixeljam team

PS: Here's a happy farewell image (by Jeffrey Nielson, with an assist by Emily Lubanko), of our beloved Dino Run 2 dinos:

New Gameplay Video

Actually, before I sign off for a while, I'd like to make a few more Dino Run 2 related posts!  It's hard to just drop it like that when so much was created for this game. There are some things that we made and put out there that I was particularly proud of and wanted to share here.

In this post, here's a link to a new gameplay video we made for Dino Run 2, featuring the Modern Day era.  New music and sfx too. It's only about 11 seconds long:

(sorry, the image is not an active link. I don't know how to make images clickable here)

And here's a small level segment design illustration by Jeffrey Nielson that never did get posted anywhere. This shows some of the setup in the video clip above.

And speaking of the impeccable Jeffrey Nielson, here's a time lapse of him animating a Carnotaurus walk cycle, with some pretty great new 8-bit music by Mark DeNardo:

The Dino Run 2 Kickstarter Funding Goal

(in reference to Exhibit A: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pixeljam/dino-run-2)

So, we received a number of comments and heard confusion about why we were asking for $175,000 to make Dino Run 2. In an effort to to help explain the distribution of funds for the amount we needed for Dino Run 2, I made a simple graphic to show how it breaks down.

To further expound, $175,000 + Ouya's matching Free the Games Fund may have appeared like a lot, but with our 7+ years of experience with budgeting for 19+ games, it was very realistic for what we were needing to develop Dino Run 2. For the vastness, complexity, depth and the scope of what we wanted Dino Run 2 to be, it was actually somewhat modest.

It's all too common for kickstarter projects to ask for much less than they actually need to do what they are promising, in hopes that they will exceed their goal by enough to actually make it possible. But so often it doesn't go that way and projects run out of funding before they are completed.  This is no good. We were not willing to take that risk, not with something as important to us as Dino Run 2, and the respect & confidence of our backers.

In the end, basically we would have had about 1/2 of that funding goal to work with + Ouya's matching Free the Games portion (minus taxes) to actually develop the game.  That's funding 6 people full time for 1.5-2 years.  It really doesn't turn out to be a lot, Plus we wouldn't have actually received Ouya's final portion of funding until 6 months after the game was released.  That's about $50K we would not have had to actually develop the game with.

This was not going to be a simple Flash game.  We were moving into coding with Unity with all the power that would enable, taking advantage of as many modern game development advances & techniques as we could. It may have looked simple with the art style, and if one was imagining it not being much different than the original Dino Run, but be assured it was going to be a deeply complex and robust game. We were going to try things never done before with pixel art to make these pixel beasts move fluidly throughout all manner of terrain, keeping tight control of each pixel.  And in coding with Unity, we would have also been able to also bring Dino Run 2 to all major consoles eventually, if we could afford to do so (it's significantly expensive to do that for each console as well)

Well, hopefully this helps illuminate why we chose the funding goal we did, and why we would do it again if we decided to go ahead and try to crowd fund Dino Run 2. Except next time we'd be much more prepared to really show off what the game would be like. This time we just didn't manage to do well enough. We learned a whole lot this time around. For whatever reason of the many we can think of, the result for the Dino Run 2 Kickstarter was.. Extinction!

Dino Run Project Crossover Images

And to wrap it up, here's a series of crossover images I made to shout-out other active Kickstarter (and ongoing fund raising) projects, in Dino Run 2 style. These were particularly fun for me to work on.  The goal was to help other existing Kickstarter projects get support by exposing their projects to our audiences, and vice versa. The trend seems to be to make an image of the other project in your own project's style.

Here are the ones I made:

To see some of the images that other developers made to cross-promote Dino Run 2 we posted some on our tumblr here:

http://pixeljamgames.tumblr.com/post/69121474802/in-case-these-were-missed-here-are-some-more

and

http://pixeljamgames.tumblr.com/post/69110554778/hurry-that-is-pretty-good-advice-when-being

If anyone knows of any others that sprang up, please let us know!  I'll post them as well.

Okay, thanks a lot for looking and reading. It's been fun posting. I hope you've enjoyed my sharing all of this. Enjoy. Be well.

-Rich
