So in order to be creative, wouldn't you agree your desktop should look nice also? I just spent a while making my windows xp actually worth looking at: Combination of visual style with patched uxtheme, rainmeter for the widgets on the desktop and a few regexp tweaks to remove/change stuffs. Notice drop shadows! :D How about yours?

My desktop is a shrine to my deity.(thanks Arne) I have an icon set called Buuf and the Zune theme. I keep folders/shortcuts for/to my RPG project, my art, and my second hard drive(for storing videos and games). Every few hours or so I switch the color theme of Winamp to keep things fresh. I believe having a desktop covered in painterly things makes me more painterly.

I have a smallish collection of 396 backgrounds cycling, so I'll provide 3, that's right ladies and gentlemen, whole three desktops for your gawking pleasure, all for the low low price of uh, hi TIGers! Awesome robots! Fuck imageshack for resizing. Cool top bar transparency! Not everything is Kojima Start menu should autohide though. Yes, that's puny HDD free space. All that piracy caught up to me my hard drives

A winning combination of horrible clutter and second monitor not playing nice with background image.

This is IT -- the missing link in the chain of my existence. Rondo's SPINNING BUDDHA is what I need to make me complete.

Cool wallpaper, Xion. Click for bigger! Ikaruga wallpaper at the moment, with a vaguely coffee-coloured Windows theme.

I started putting everything in auto-hiding task bars...it forces me to get rid of old short-cuts.

Nice, simple and functional. I don't like the number of icons that accumulated lately. Most are pointless.

I like to keep things clutter free, I used to have a dock but I keep all the programs I need in the start bar. I also change my wallpaper every week (at least, that's what it feels like -_- ) Also, there was another thread like this but it's been buried in the ages.
