I live in Emeryville. It's a burb on the east end of the bay bridge. Rent here is almost half that of the city. BART is close and so is Berkeley, when you don't want to cross the bay for a good time.

There are at least four game companies in Emeryville, not including Pixar.

Three hundred a month for san fran? Holy tar, that's less than I'm paying now for long, non-functional transit rides filled with hobos.

I might as well throw in my pitch for Austin Smiley  we've got amazing weather, junkloads of game companies, an incredible indie music scene, pretty good restaurants, amazing outdoor activities for probably 10 months out of the year, and rent in clean safe parts of the city is very affordable.  not to mention the behemoth that is UT, and a solid, broad tech economy that helps keep the city stable.  One of the greenest cities in the country!  Also the only "blue" city and county in the state of texas, if that matters Smiley  We're home to the finest indie bookstore and indie theater chains in the country, to boot.

I love Austin!

To clarify about the rent thing, my wife and I rented a 1200 sq ft apartment in the green belt (meaning surrounded by trees etc), within 10 minutes of the capitol building, for $650/mo...

$300's probably an exaggeration... probably closer to what you're paying up there in Canadia.  I know the past few places she's lived have been dirt cheap, though.  And really small.  Not dirty or run down, but small.

Good luck moving to the states!

Just decide whether you want to be a Crip or a Blood before you come over.

I've been sitting here, trying to make a good case for New York City. And it's hard.
The rent is out of control (I pay $1250/mo for what is essentially a large closet). The work mentality is "work for 20 hours, sleep for 4". There is no nature to speak of and the people are crazy.

Inexplicably though, I am completely in love with it. I travel a good deal (San Fran being incidentally the last place i visited) and I always look forward to coming back home. There is an atmosphere here of being at the center of the world, that no other city can match. The roaring, swirling universe rotates around you and there is so much going on at any moment that you find it impossible to ever be idle.

You have to work for it though, cause things are expensive. But then again, there are plenty of high-paying jobs around, especially these days, so really, i think it all balances out.

STOUT!

... is ridiculously overpriced here, but I still love it Smiley

I only wish there was some sort of local game industry Sad Closest we have are those Max Payne physics guys, Havok.

If you fancy a change, you should think about Europe. There are loads of great places to live in this part of the world, and they're all fairly close together. I believe London's got quite a booming industry, for example.

Meh - you could charge whatever you like for alcohol in this country, and people would buy it anyway Smiley

Ah, sorry, seem to have taken this off topic... You're thinking about San Francisco, then? Isn't there, like, a cataclysmic earthquake due any day?

I'm moving back to Philadelphia; last time I lived there my rent was $250, and the place I'm looking at now would be $225.  It's got a rocking music scene, lots of young people, and it's not very far from New York if something cool is happening there.  You don't need a car, since riding your bike across town is as fast as driving.  Food is cheap there too, so you can survive on a little bit of work, leaving the rest of your time for creative pursuits.
