I heard about that. The problem is the business model: they charge per card pack, just like in real life. I would have loved it when I was younger and it was my parents' money I was spending. Now that it's mine, though, it's just too expensive.

I played Magic when I was a kid, around 13 or so. My ex played it a lot, current day. And my buddy goes to like state championships for it. It's pretty big around here with the nerd population, although I just don't have time for it anymore =X But it's fun

I too definitely went through a magic phase at a younger age. I was a hardcore player from like 10-15. Set wise, I started playing around prophecy and stopped at planeshift. It was fun, but when you really get into it, its a huge money drainer.
Since I now have a giant collection of magic cards, over the years I've returned to play a bunch of times, but I've refused to purchase my cards. So all my games involve hanging out with old friends who have lots of old cards, going through our collections and just building the most powerful decks we can. It's always good for a laugh and some fun if you've got the time.
I was always partial to black/blue or black/red decks. I love being able to destroy everything as soon as it comes into play, when accomplished correctly you should always be able to annoy the hell out of your opponent with a deck like that. My most powerful deck was a black/red deck that I must have spent at least $50 on (buying individual rare cards not packs). I don't remember the card names at the moment, but it used the strategy of sending big creatures to your graveyard and then doing gravediggers and its non-creature equivalents to bring them into play. Its not the fastest deck, but if I draw the cards I need, by the 5th or 6th turn It's practically impossible to stop.
I briefly tried MTG online, but was not a fan. Again, it was just a huge drain on the wallet, and this time for something intangible. I couldn't do it. I did find some program that was like a magic card database where you could build whatever decks you wanted and then test them out. It even had online capabilities, but no one actually used them so it was a waste. I remember trying to troll people to play against my squirrel deck. lol those were the days...

Magic is sort of a last generation game, though. It was big in the 90's, but kids these days are more likely to go for Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon.

Wait: is that supposed to be a count against Magic?

Now that it's mine, though, it's just too expensive. that business model is only setup for hardcore tounry/draft players. they have basic online shops setup where you can basicly get all the commons/uncommons/non tourmey rares of all the current sets for under 10 bucks, and theres no monthly fee or anything to play.

I played some in high school, but eventually traded the few cards I had that were worth anything for Super Nintendo games. About ten years later, a few guys at my work who also used to play suggested that we bring in some of our old cards and play at lunch. That led to our buying more cards and playing once or twice a week.
I still think it's a great game, and the newer sets are a lot of fun. Some of the artwork has become excellent in recent years as they've sought out already well-known fantasy artists. But the game can be an enormous waste of money if you don't somehow limit yourself--I think it's almost as bad a habit as playing a MMORPG in some extreme cases.
I've never tried the online stuff because collecting the physical cards is half the fun for me--I've always liked that sort of thing. (I still have all of my Garbage Pail Kids.)

I used to play occasionally with my friends years ago but now I mostly just play every now and then with my girlfriend. I just bought a few packs on a whim a little while ago and we've been playing off an on ever since. It is a great game but as was mentioned previously it can be a incredible money sink if you want to really get into it. I just enjoy the shear variety of strategies that you can create using different cards in conjunction. I had an awesome white/green deck that was unanimously banned from playing magic with my friends :D

I played cube draft for the first time yesterday and I can really recommend it. It's great -- you draft from a preconstructed pool which consists of the most famous cards of all time (you don't get to keep the cards...) My deck became four colored just so I could play all the cool cards I never get to play otherwise.
I really love the game, it's almost the only thing I play nowadays (and I get to play it with my colleagues during lunch break!).

The only thing stopping me from playing TCG is the expense and the fact that nobody I know plays them. At all.
I have a whole bunch of Pokemon cards just lying around, and have only played Magic a couple of times at a friends house (one that I don't see anymore) and I really liked it. Although I didn't get very into it.
I also saw the computer game in a shop for like $10 but didn't buy it.
