Wheelbound

I'm starting a devlog here for Wheelbound, a platform game that I've been working on for long enough now that it might actually see the light of day.  Grin

I'm going to try and get in the routine of updating it once a week, to keep me motivated.

What is Wheelbound?

Wheelbound is an exploration-focused platform game in the style of Metroid or Castlevania. In it you play a character who has been terribly injured, and must rely on his wheelchair to manoeuvre through the hostile environment of a bizarre alien world. Through the course of your sci-fi horror adventure you will encounter deadly wildlife, arcane ruins, powerful upgrades and, just maybe, dark secrets about where you are and how you came to be here…

Where did the idea for Wheelbound come from?

Wheelbound is an idea that we’ve been working on for a couple of years now, in various prototype forms. The basic concept came from this idea of how unfortunate it would be if you were a videogame character and you couldn’t walk. We realised there aren’t really any game characters who have major disabilities, so wouldn’t it be interesting to make one? Thus was born the concept of a platform game where you can’t jump, only roll.

How are you making it?

With Multimedia Fusion 2 – a sometimes cantankerous, confusing beast of code-free game development software that none-the-less is pretty powerful when you know what you’re doing, and has some major advantages such as not needing to know how to program.

When will it be released?

There’s currently no release date planned, though we’re aiming for some time in 2014. Wheelbound is being made in our spare time, and will be completely free, so it’ll be done when it’s done.

Weekly update here: http://nickdablin.wordpress.com/2014/03/23/301/

I've added some new jungle ruins tiles, a bunch of physics objects and some plants that punt you skyward like jump pads.

I've been trying to put some halfway decent AI in this week, with not much success. I have got some pretty solid line-of-sight working though:

And putting this in was fun of course:

This week I've been doing some level design, and putting in a new hazard - a carnivorous pitcher plant for the jungle areas:

It's been a long time - put this project on hiatus largely due to fatigue with the concept and the amount of work. I have started working on it again however, just with a somewhat downscaled vision, and hopefully more realistic expectations.

If anyone has tips on how to stay focused and actually finish something, I'm all ears!  Smiley

Sandstorms are in:

As are beams you can cut through with a blowtorch:

Does he blink more because he's in the sandstorm? That's a nice little attention to detail.

It's a good concept for a unique platformer, not being able to jump, and all the physicsy environment stuff is something I tend not to see in Metroidvania's, so that's nice.
