Jan 18, 2009: uDevGames (mac. 10$ entry)

Also requires the game to carry an open source license covering both the source code and the game data files, contain an advertisement for the udevgames contest, provide a post-mortem document, not been shown to the public in any form before December (including trailer videos, etc)... and web-based games are ineligible.

Oh, and if you win a prize, then you have to write a review of that prize for use on their website within the following six weeks.

So you pay them for the right to make an open source game advertising their website, and if you win, then you're obliged to write content for their website too.

Best.  Contest.  Ever.   Cheesy

Might want to add the YoYo games competition to this list. It's only for Game Maker, but it's a pretty important contest, each of them so far have led to some great games.

The current (winter) yoyo games competition is closed, I think.  I'll add a separate set of links lower down to sites that tend to have comps, I guess.

Ah, I didn't realize it was over. The next one will probably start soon, though -- they seem to have one every season.

The competition at Yoyo right now is actually the 'Save the Planet' competition, which ends Jan. 4th.

(I know because POPGunner is an entry... Wink)

Also, The Poppenkast is doing another cool 3 hour compo right now: http://www.thepoppenkast.com/forum/index.php?topic=1004.0
(I also made a game for it  Cheesy)

I was actually just looking for some current compos and found it pretty hard to dig up all the current ones.  It would be nice to have a central place to look.  Something like that doesn't already exist does it?

that's not what I had intended.

Shoo, I was thinking of mentioning poppenkast, but then that's an 'invite only' forum, so I don't know if there's much point in mentioning it.

That's for mentioning the current yoyo comp; their site doesn't appear to be particularly navigable....

Hopefully this thread will to some extent serve that function.

Thanks a lot for starting this increpare; I'll make sure to post about any game design related compos that I come across!  Beer!

EDIT: just checked out the Poppenkast compo and I'll definitely be entering that; I really need to get something done for once, and I'll view this 3 hours like a test of my GM skill or something (which desperately needs to be tested, as I fear it's getting weaker).

Are you a member of poppenkast?  I've been thinking of making something based on the theme for a lark all the same, but yeah.
Oh wait, anyone can enter it. Hurrah.  I'll add it, then.
