Take the photos in raw mode and then bump the saturation in post. Looks trippy as heck anyway.

Man its like there's suddenly all this detail in the eyes, but everything else isn't really up to scratch. What are you painting in and where are you sourcing your colours? Did you use a reference?

Yeah I don't know how to push it further I used a reference but I kinda just came up with colors on the spot, it wasn't a very planned piece. I'm painting in Paint Tool Sai.

More practice I guess :^) Build up a swatch of colours you like to use, and for this sort of thing don't be afraid to really push the saturation. I'm not at home at the moment so this is just a simple curves + hue/sat bump, plus a bit of a sharpen. Yours looks super grey imho. You'd also benefit from a little more time spent with the hands and less time dragging colours through the hair, but the blue lighting you've pulled in on the face is actually pretty nice. His forehead is super flat though and the piece would benefit from more construction and blocking stuff out. Be sure to flip often. I think the keys are H and V in sai. If I get time I might do a paintover tomorrow, or someone more qualified can :^)

Damn Blambo, I am envious of your skills. Here is another picture of the women character I am working on. Here is a portrait of her in her armor. @Blambo: What brushes do you use for that nice texture you have going on in your paintings?

I rough things in with the chalk brush or some similar textured brush, then detail with a hard square brush or hard circle brush. I like it because it feels similar to the process of oil painting.

I might give it a go later, right now I am just designing characters for a portfolio so that I may hopefully become a conceptual artist for a game company. I just graduated from art college a couple of weeks ago and now I have time to work on it.

Yeah that approach is quite nice. Did the same thing with my last painting and loved the results. Do you also keep your main paint on one layer?
