The negative space above the head really just looks like a giant gap. I really like that dress design though.

Fair enough. I was having trouble with the hair highlights. Glad you like the dress, though. I used a screen print someone gave out for free, and overlaid it.

Thats true, I didn't think to look up references at the time, though that bottom left image looks similar to the hair I drew, with it being almost completely black on top. She's blushing because the character is very shy, etc. Can you tell me what you don't like about the background choice? Thanks for the compliments, too!

Re: black on top - sure but it doesn't have highlights coming back down into the dark area and isn't shaded like a jelly  I feel like the shading in general at the top of your hair is way too smooth and goes against the grain of the hair. If you removed the highlight coming down in the centre at least it'd just look flat but it needs more blending into the dark area too - I think it'd be very hard to get very sharp highlights in such a well lit scene. I'm on my phone at the moment so I'll get into the other stuff now rather than banging on about this always get ref though! The background colours are nice but it feels too photographic and detailed compared with the character. The transition between cartoon and photograph is too abrupt imo. I like the idea of a green background on it though for sure. Not sure how I feel about her shadow. No worries, glad to see you improving so much. Makes me look forward to having more time for art through January! |

That background photo is outburned and sucks all the colour out of dress. Just compare belt to a grass.

 This took a few hours for me to put together (I'm really slow) and was never intended to be anything more than a scenery study. I ended up throwing two of my characters in there to tie it all together. It's sketchy as all hell, but I'm fairly pleased with it. |
