iScribble's sometimes good when looking for feedback on ideas and such. And that is why I'm presenting a currently unnamed character.

Thanks, overlay, color dodge and a shitload of adjustment layers usually does the trick (oh, and the unsharp mask filter after copying&merging all layers is something everyone should try out). Also: Phalluses everywhere

@Pen Wow, I really like the texture brush you used in your last one, and the background has a nice palette knife feel to it I'm giving watercolor a try right now: Watercolor & ink. Redrew a Spirited Away art book pencil sketch. Lately, I've realized that copying the work of really talented artists for the sake of learning is pretty beneficial. You get to retrace their decisions and I think it helps a lot. Later, I'll take what I've learned and make it my own.

Also, I definitely agree that imitating (or emulating) other people's work is a great learning experience. I still haven't found a comfortable art style, but I'm learning from other people here and there . Regarding your art, it's beautiful! I haven't been able to grasp the art of painting very well (which is even more reason to admire your work ) keep it up!

@Savethedinosaurs: Thanks, I usually start with some kind of texture and paint over it with a fairly palette knife-y brush, which really helps get the painterly effect. Animated version of the picture, to show the progress: http://forumimages.erikronnblom.com/lunch_02_animooted.gifIf anyone is looking at this thread with a simple dialup connection they'll hate me (1,9 megs!?)

I'm a tad mad about it, you could've hotlinked it, but it was cool nonetheless. I have no idea where you were going with the start but I've seen people start with stranger things I suppose.

Sorry, removed the image. Starting with an abstract pattern helps you find interesting shapes, and adds 'free' information to the picture. It's much easier to remove information you don't like than it is to add information later on. It also gives you loads of colors to color pick from.
