I think in general too-small space is a problem for the Spelunker. I spent a lot of time getting thrown around by Yetis in the new version, and found that if a Yeti pins you up against a wall then it will be instant death, not from getting thrown repeatedly, but from getting thrown once into a tiny space. Body disappears and everything.
It doesn't happen that often for me, though; I like to think of it as a Congo-esque scenario with trained killer apes.
Yeah, I've been similarly fragged by shopkeepers. Complete explosion into blood.

I got fragged by the teleporter. The side was clear but I think I pressed action twice too fast. Is this intended as a "don't overuse" thing? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised... there are booby traps you know.

What if the big rock stops in front of the entrance? Well, I'll tell you what, you CAN'T do anything.

Ooh, I'm sorry you heard about this too late, but . . . you haven't tried all your options yet. In that picture, I see you still have bombs. You can make a nice rock garden (to swipe the term from the darius_spelunks twitter). In other news . . . I saw people recently making a big deal about having hundreds of plays, and/or complaining that it took hundreds of plays to beat the game. I refer you to how this . . . Linky-link. . . was created back in May: from the fact that I have the game and I play it, I am now up to about 2000 plays. It's merely what you'd find if all your favorite games had play counters in them.

I suspect it's what you'd find if your top five games of ALL TIME had play counters on them. 2000 games is hundreds of hours of Spelunking. There are very few games I could claim to have spent that much time with.
I don't think it's something to complain about, it just indicates that Spelunky is both epic and extremely compelling. I've only got a hundred-odd games in so far, but I don't doubt I'll have logged 2000 eventually.

Forget finishing the game, that's EASY compared to the brutal challenges that lie in wait. Specifically, has anyone managed to unlock a single room? I must confess that I may just have to give up that quest. I've tried many times, but I can hardly score a bronze.

The Challenge rooms aren't that bad. Well, not all of them. The Sun room simply requires that you do a complete - that is, no shortcuts - run while going out of your way to grab all the treasure you see (also, don't buy anything, and don't neglect the awesome treasure at the top of the boss room). The Moon room is tough, but not impossible: get to the exit as quickly as possible without taking unnecessary risks, and restart if you hit a dark level. The Stars room is easy if you can make it to the final boss while holding a Scepter - lead it around the room, kill the enemies it generates, and periodically check the pause screen to see how far along you are. Once you hit 120 kills, let the boss off itself. The only one I haven't been able to unlock legitimately is the Changing room, and that's mostly a luck-of-the-draw thing. Sometimes the game doesn't spawn eight Damsels. Addendum: Okay, full disclosure. I'm also a horrible person who, if he finds an altar, will kill everything in that level - Damsels, Shopkeepers, Yeti, everything - for the purpose of making blood sacrifices to heathen gods. So that's also a limiting factor, I suppose.

Yeah I was able to clear 14 levels and only found 5 damsels total. It seems a bit mean.
That's a smart idea for the kill one, I'm gonna have to do that. Not sure why it never occurred to me.

Damsels are easier to find in v1.0, so unlocking the Changing Room isn't based heavily on chance any more. Compasses have a greater rate of occurrence too, at least by my limited sampling. The new version should be easier on newcomers and more profitable for hardened players.

I can do both. I think that none of the challenges are hard (getting the damsels is the hardest for sure), but there isn't much to do but just get more playthroughs after you've done those. It's annoying

Strangely enough, I found the speedrun challenge the easiest. But the room unlocked wasn't that interesting. I'm delaying playing 1.0 because I value my time too much to waste it on going back to the addiction

It's not that I'm bragging but this is an awesome inventory, I kept the web-gun thou, it's more effective against frogs then a shotgun, because if using a shotgun you have to be on the same "level" as the creature. http://i27.tinypic.com/25tdsht.jpg

Hey, I just noticed that if you destroy the tile under the exit during the final boss fight, it'll be magically restored once the boss buys it. I'm not sure how long this feature has been in place, but it's a good one.

WHY OH WHY ;_; Oh, wow. So you were standing right there when the block rematerialized? You know, I was sort of curious what'd happen under those circumstances.

I had beat the boss, and I was like "uh... how do I get through the door?" and after about 15 or so seconds, it appeared, I died, and I was all like ";_;".

Interesting bug: I had a bow with 3 arrows, then I found a crate with 8 arrows, and suddenly the other bow was reloaded. Also it seems that the bows use the same arrows, so shooting one with one makes the other lose an arrow too.
