Here's one of the best Spelunky tips I can give you: In situations like this, stand close enough to the edge of the nearest tile (in this case, the trap) so that Indie will start fumbling; then, press C once or twice. The bomb/rope will eventually drop, causing the trap to be activated. Then you can go safely and get your item back. (I wonder if doing that here would kill the shopkeeper!) Brilliant! Thanks.

Actually, there's another way. It might not work in that particular situation, but it works in other situations like that.
When you flip over a ledge (by crawling up to it), you won't activate traps. You'll be in the sights of the arrow trap, but it won't set off. You can then activate it safely by jumping back on top of the ledge so that the arrow misses you.
This is a bug, though. The arrow traps only react to movement, and flipping over a ledge doesn't technically count you as moving.

Bugs with the kissing parlor Derek. First when I picked up a girl to buy her and pressed p the shop keeper thought I was trying to buy a kiss and said I did not have enough money. To make things worse, putting down the woman caused her to as usual cry and dash out of the shop resulting in me getting shot in the chest.

This is a much more powerful metaphor for relationship break-up than Braid was.

Thank you thank you! The response has been really gratifying. And you guys have been giving me great criticisms and feed ( ) back. I wasn't planning on updating the game so much so fast after the initial release, but it's just too much fun! Here's your right-after-big-new-release-clean-up release: New Build:http://www.derekyu.com/games/spelunky_0_98_1.rarhttp://www.derekyu.com/games/spelunky_0_98_1.exe (exe only) I fixed a crashing problem with the bow (which I modified slightly but didn't sanity-check) and cleaned up the level editor bugs. Now if you try to load a level without an entrance, it will put Indie in the upper left corner. And the "negative array index" crash is gone, too. You can also drop jars and rocks. Oh, and the custom levels should have their trimmings now (provided you have "high detail" on). (The level editor is helpful for stress-testing the game, hehe. ) Oh oh, and you should still run the config just in case, but and the keys crash is kinda fixed now, I think. It had less to do with the config file and more to do with the fact that pressing the pay button outside of the level.

Alt-F4 will close Spelunky if you use it from the level editor. In fact, it seems to be closing it from anywhere at the moment.
I can't believe I missed the editor. This is awesome!

Is there a Mac build, or has anyone got this to work with Wine? I always loved Spelunker, Pitfall, etc. cavey games and this looks wicked.
Me want to PLAY.

It's made with game maker, so no. Wait for the mac version of game maker, perhaps!

Is there a Mac build, or has anyone got this to work with Wine? Works okay with VMware fusion on the mac, but it might be relying on 3D graphics support.

This is the best way to liberate the woman without getting shot. Put her down, run out of the shop before she gets up, get to a safe distance.

fantastic game.
Is there a list of all the items you can get, mayhaps?
and what they do. I must say, I was disappointed with what the cape did.

What the cape does, is make you have an awesome cape streaming behind you. I think maybe it had some effect on jumping, but I never cared because I was too busy admiring Indie's dashing style with his awesome cape. And then I died.

It slows down fall speed if you press jump again in mid-air. I was expecting double jump, hence my disappointment.

Another bug -- or perhaps a game maker limitation? I pressed escape and went off to dinner, then when I came back the screen was blank and I had this: ___________________________________________ ERROR in action number 1 of Begin Step Event for object oScreen:
Trying to use non-existing surface.
And pressing ignore gave me more of the same error, although it seems it redrew some of the screen before displaying it again.
