Weirdest. Freakin'. Bug. Ever. And yet it was so awesome...
(Skip to the bottom if you don't want to read the whole story  Tongue)

So I'm on a perfect run. I've made it to the second area, with about $40k and 2 damsels saved. Haven't robbed a shop or murdered anybody, it's just been an awesome, flawless run. Finally, I can't resist the temptation anymore--I see a shop conveniently placed above a sacrificial altar (talk about slow business...) So of course I kill the shopkeeper with a bomb and take all his gear (spectacles, pitcher's mitt, climbing gloves, cape, and of course a shotgun)

I use a sticky bomb to blow up the shop's floor and I look down, seeing an annoying jumping frog off to the side and a man-eating plant just casually strolling across the bloodied altar. Weird. Anyway, I throw the shopkeeper's corpse straight towards the altar, thinking that it would take the plant by surprise and knock it out (x2 sacrifice FTW) Actually, the plant swallowed the corpse and then bounced off of the altar to the left, crushing the jumping frog. Naturally I was like "WTF" so I decided I'd wait until the plant woke up again, and then I'd whip it good and sacrifice it at the altar (I never take chances with carrying man-eating plants)

I went off to find some shiny treasure while I waited. As soon as I got back, the man-eating plant suddenly burst open and the shopkeeper literally jumped out. It was the most hilarious thing I've seen in the game to date. The resurrected shopkeeper slammed me against a wall, so I used my climbing gloves to get back up an grab the shotgun. I timed the shot perfectly and finished the shopkeeper off, then used the cape to float back down and sacrifice his corpse. Finally.

All of a sudden, I noticed that my Udjat Eye was blinking furiously, even though I was standing right on top of the altar. Somehow I thought that I could place a sticky bomb in just the right spot so that it didn't blow up the altar and aggro hella spiders, but I was wrong. So wrong. The spiders swarmed my corpse and then proceeded to all fall into the water below the altar and drown. The whole thing was kind of disturbing.

LONG STORY SHORT: Dead shopkeepers can burst out of man-plants...alive?!

And here are a few notes I've been meaning to give for a while...

- Kapala = overpowered. It's definitely a great idea for an item, but stuff like Yeti Blender is just messing up the game. It should be much, much harder to gain HP from the kapala, considering that previously the only way to get HP was from lots of sacrifices or from saving damsels. Those two methods felt pretty balanced. This doesn't, though...it's really something you should look into.

- Flare crates...you  happen upon a crate of flares, just as you enter a dark level?? Hmm. Just a coincidence?  Tongue I actually liked using flares in the previous versions. They also always came in handy when I needed a quick throwing weapon. I think you should simply disable flares for custom levels to avoid level exploits, but still let the player use flares freely in the normal game.

- About the level editor. Some small things should be added, like mattocks not breaking in custom levels. This might also tie in to the fact that Spelunky deserves a much better level editor/custom level selector.

I seriously love this game. It's been distracting me from my studies and I got 400 plays (0 wins) in about a week. Defiantly a favorite.

I have Spelunky running in OS X using CrossOver Games and some other stuff.  It's glorious.  Kiss

I'll write up instructions tomorrow. Until then, rejoice!

Nyogtha: Actually, I don't know if that's a bug. It has happened to me once, but perhaps it takes some time to get fully eaten? And during that time, you can free things inside the mantrap! If it's like that and not a shopkeeper-only bug, it's quite awesome.

BUG REPORT:

If you are playing as SPOILER SCM, you can get shot by a shopkeeper as you walk into the exit. (ie. you do not go invincible as soon as the "walk in exit" animation starts.)

ADDITIONAL REPORT: I just got killed by a spiked totem pole while walking in an exit as well. AND I had a jetpack on Sad. This bug is a serious bummer when it comes up.

YET ANOTHER REPORT: If SPOILER SCM is stunned while exiting (by an arrow for instance) you just stay stunned and never get up.

AND ANOTHER REPORT: If you destroy an arrow trap that is a wall to a lava pit, it doesn't drain.

AND ANOTHER: If you mattock out one block on the side of a pool of water that has a 2 block thick wall, it doesn't drain, but the the new created space doesn't flood with water either. So you have a strange little spot not filled with water that is, well, underwater.

There's a website called www.GMArcade.com that lets you play GM games online through Java. Spelunky should be uploaded on that website, especially since that would give Mac users a chance to play it.

That would be awesome. Smiley

I've got it working here, but I'm currently trying to figure out the ramifications of the installation process.

As of right now it's only tested on Leopard and involves installing a version of X11 that would break if you upgraded to Snow Leopard.  It's possible to uninstall before upgrading, but it involves doing command-line stuff.

Derek has given me permission to create SpelunkyEd, but I've been so busy lately that I haven't had any time to work on it.

First, the game is great, and since the shopkeepers always spawn at end of the level, way more brutal to try a full run through than the previous/alpha rules. I'm not sure if anyone actually has without cheating yet (I'd need a full video to partially trust them, and only in or after the version you changed it.)

Second: bugs.

I think when you fixed the "shopkeeper slide", it broke the shopkeeper rules. The shopkeeper can fire through walls. The easiest way to show it, edit a level, and put 4 shopkeepers in a small dirt box only 1 tile thick. Just stand in front of it, and eventually you'll get shot as they keep firing, but I'm pretty sure you don't even see bullets come out.

Another bug I only saw once. A shop was in the lower left of the map (level two I think). In front of the door was one of those tallish block sets near the end of the level. Now the exit was quite a ways to the right, but probably same height. The bug is I watched someone steal a climbing glove, run out of the store, get shot while facing the wall, and instantly the level advanced, with Spelunky not getting the glove, and taking no damage. The person was NOT near the door at all.

so if a dead shopkeeper gets consumed near a man eating plant next to a altar he would bust through the plant like toilet paper. Screamy was the dead restless?

Actually, that's a good question...I don't remember. If that was actually a feature, then props to Derek  Gentleman

Huh? Huh?
Even if there were shopkeepers on each exit, it wouldn't be that hard ;O
Shopkeepers are surprisingly easy to lead away and then just quickly enter the door.

Nope. I did that in the level editor a few weeks ago, and the same thing happened.

Ah, looks like Sharkey 1UP'd Spelunky. Awesome.

 Beer!

Tell us, does traffic spike when something like this happens?

I didn't even know there were cheats. The game is mondo-tough (a "soul destroyingly addictive cavalcade of relentless hellish torment" reports Scott Sharkey of 1UP) but it's still not THAT difficult. Game can be beat, Meigus! Just, uh, gradually. And with much Screaming.

Oo, I just played all the way from L5 up to the L16 boss. I realise that is way behind the curve for some people, but considering I'm only 200 games in and haven't even opened up the second tunnel yet, I though that was a pretty good effort...
