A note about that ghost that you all seem to compare to the one in Bubble Bobble. The only goal is a timeout, and it's normal that an arcade game should feature a time out, one of the main rules of an arcade game is that you shouldn't be able to play for too long without using new coins. Without a timeout you'd take your time and the game wouldn't be rentable. I don't think it's really made for the gameplay or the player himself.
Yes, a lot of computer games also featured timers, but only at times you had to add challenge to lengthen a short game's lifetime.
The only places where you see timeouts on modern games are places where it makes sense with the events (you acticate something & you have to run away from it, etc)

I've been playing this game for a few days. It's excellent, although still a bit unpolished. Some bugs I've found: I was floating with a cape next to a monster and a damsel, hit the monster with a whip, picked up the damsel and somehow ended up stuck on top of them and died. Climbing after pushing the block made me climb up with the pushing animation. Not really important, it just looks odd. I'm not sure if it's intentional, but you don't get hurt if you fall down a long drop and hit a spider web. It'd be nice if you could pick up unconcious enemies. It'd allow more strategies. For example, you could pick up a plant and throw it next to enemies you want it to eat. There should be a way to get more flares. Getting through dark levels with lots of water can be nearly impossible with three of them.

Actually, the most useless item in the game is the parachute. Never have I had to use it before, and often it prematurely deploys. So, yeah. I'd rather have three extra ropes than another parachute thanks.
The web cannon is definitely useful for crossing long gaps. Since the webs stick to each other, you can make a bridge out of it easy.

I've got Spelunky running under WINE, albeit in a kind of half-assed manner.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), and Wine 1.1.7, the standard binary for this version of ubuntu. in winecfg, I've got all of the options under Graphics => Window Settings checked. All other settings are at default.
The config window doesn't render, and Wine fails to display the game if it's set to play at x2 or x3.
x1 is tiny, but I've been using the magnifier in Compiz to zoom in, and make the game visible. Sound works fine.
Since the config menu doesn't render, I've been editing the settings.cfg file to experiment. The important part is to set the last item from "3" to "1" in order to get it to run at x1.
I'm a novice when it comes to Wine, or really anything under the hood here, so I probably can't help anyone beyond listing what I did. But I just wanted to get word out that it's possible! Now to see if I can survive to level 6!
Love this game.
Has anybody else had any luck with WINE? I tried this, and by setting the first item in the cfg file to "0" and the last one to "1", I got it to start up and not crash. The splash screen appears with an opaque white background, then the configuration screen appears completely black. I can blindy press enter and X to get through the configuration screen and the introduction, and then I can hear the music and the sound effects as I jump and use the whip, but I still see nothing but a completely black window. I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 and I have an NVIDIA GeForce 9300M. I would love to be able to play without booting back into Vista. (Although being able to play Spelunky without rebooting might stop me from ever doing anything productive again.)

On a side note, have you considered swapping the locations of the "start" and "scores" doors on the title screen? If you did, then someone who just died and is coming out of the high score room would now go in different directions to get to "start" or to the "shortcut house." This would be slightly more intuitive, I think.

I finally got the shortcut for lvl. 9. It took me less time to get through sector 3, that to get through sector 2. It has been easier than sector 2 for me. Also, I find the parachute very useful in this levels.

When I have it set to windowed mode and no scaling, I can't see the config or title screen, but I can see everything ALMOST fine in the main game... it's flipped vertically though What an odd bug. I've been booting into Windows pretty frequently thanks to this game. I wish it wasn't made with Game Maker! Those seem to always give me trouble under Wine

You're clearly smoking the hemp the parachute is made out of if you think it is useful in any way. :V

I always crash from the black config screen, always always, but I'm also in Debian with an older version of Wine so I don't know how relevant my issues are. Oh well.

I'd say it's usable considering its low price, it's just kinda broken since it only works once and sometimes activates when you don't even need it.

Get the cape. It's like a multiple use parachute.

To get it to run under Wine, I had the first flag set to 1. If set to 0, no display for me! The config screen is always black, no matter what I've tried so far, but you can just hit enter, click the x, or click in the lower right corner to start the game.
My settings.cfg looks like so:
1 1 1 0 1
Wine is set to "emulate a desktop", and the window manager is allowed to "decorate" the windows (set from the "graphics" tab of winecfg.
So Spelunky thinks it's fullscreen, but it's actually in a gnome window that contains the Wine desktop. If that makes any sense.
One more thing: I've been running it from the console, because I get a cascade of runtime errors when I quit, and usually have to shut the console down to stop them. Otherwise I have to restart X.

Skeleton stood up as I ran underneath it, and started spazzing out. It's standing in place, quickly turning back and forth. I think it might be stuck on the ceiling or something, I don't know. I've seen similar behavior, where two cavemen were stuck, one on top the other, in a spiderweb. The bottom caveman was spazzing out, constantly spinning in place, and the top one was frozen still.
