There should be checks so that the damsel doesn't spawn in such a way that she dies instantly. Also, why is it my fault that the boulder smashed into the shop?
I agree.

Extra bombs and ropes really should be auto-pickup.
Ah yeah, this is a good idea, with a +3 treatment similar to how the gold racks up.  You would probably want to do something to distinguish the behaviour of the bombs and ropes in the shop from the ones elsewhere in the level though.

Wow, this is a fantastic game, very addictive. I've had just one problem thus far, and that's my inability to remap the keys. Whenever I hit the key/joyconfig button in the launcher, it goes through and seems to work, but once I get into the game, everything's still at its default.

I've tried editing the .cfg files directly, and I've tried both versions posted in the OP. It all does the same thing. I'd love to get this working, as on my particular gamepad, I can't hit the default run and jump buttons at the same time with my thumb.  Beg

I'm running XP SP3, on a rather decent comp. Let me know if you need any more details. Thanks!

Just popping in to repost something from the SomethingAwful topic on this that intrigued me:

Quote from: Well my attempt to swipe the idol safely has failed once again. I attempted to swap the idol for something of equal weight before booking it, but all that happened was a bolder dropped down on top of the woman I had switched the idol for, obliterating her instantly and then myself shortly after.

Whelp, back to the drawing board then. :|

Could this be implemented?

Bah, I want to play this game so bad, but I can't get it to work properly. Apologies if this has already been mentioned (I'm too impatient to read through 40 pages at the moment). All I get is the text at the beginning, followed by a bit of black, a brief flash of goodness, some bats on a black background, another flash of goodness, then black again. If I pause the game I can see everything, but (obviously) can't play. No variation of the game settings seems to fix it Sad

edit: Oops, never mind! Google to the rescue.

I really enjoy this game!  I could imagine playing this and enjoying it for a lot longer than even commercial games.  I particularly like the rougelike procedural generation element.  So far, the only issue I have had is that it crashes when I exit by pressing esc and quit.

There should be a handful of items you can unlock that you can take with you from the opening room. Make the game a bit easier, and obviously you'd only be able to have one or two.I think it'd be really cool if you could mix and match things like that.

Also you should be able to have weapons that replace the whip instead of just being held and used.

Extra bombs and ropes really should be auto-pickup. Combine that with the Up+X, Down+X controls, and the control scheme gets a little messy and unintuitive.

Also, I like the tells like "I hear snakes, I hate snakes" and "It smells like wet fur in here." I'd love to see more. Like tell us when there's a shop or a special item or whatnot.

I also agree on bomb and rope drops outside of shops being auto-pickup.

And having the weapons being held right now poses a ton of problems with getting damsels/idols/using flares. You're forced to juggle all those things. Then again, it might be a proper compromise considering how powerful the weapons are.

Suggestions:

- Ability to drop special items. It seems ilogical until you get something like a cape/jetpack combo which doesn't always work too well, or when you get the climbing gloves by accident, which I dislike using most of the time.

- About the weapons, you could use a sort of item limit and allow us to get weapons and still be able to hold other stuff on our hands. Seems like one of those 'been done several times' solutions, but it's an interesting one for me.

Also, [SPOILER][SPOILER]

Some of my suggestions:
Weapons - Make it take up a slot that you switch through like the bombs/rope. That way carrying anything stops you from using it, but it doesn't have to be left behind.
Flares - Is there anyway yo get more? Getting through a dark level with water is sometimes impossible with 1 flare.
Spiders - The hit boxes seem a little flakey, I die form them a lot when I feel I shouldn't. I'll be whipping them, and it looks like it's hitting but it isn't.
The Teleporter - I have no idea how it works, is it a random number of blocks away in the direction you're facing? Regardless, sometimes it teleports me into a wall and I die instantly. A bug?
Climbing Ropes - The hit box for the area that's climbable seems off, it takes a bit of moving left/right to get lined up to use it sometimes, given he fairly jittery movement this is a pain.

I really like the game apart from those quibbles though. It's such a great idea and executed really well.

This is something I forgot to mention as well. I find myself holding my breath when I set a rope going down and try to climb down instead of falling down.

Also, some new (or maybe they've been mentioned here before, who knows) bugs I found, this time with picture proof:

I lucked out and got a boatload of loot on the very first level, which kinda breaks the tally screen. This was thanks to a boulder that smashed through large parts of the level leaving those little gold nuggets around. Actually, that's possibly a bug/improvement case in itself: I blew up the idol altar from below, but that didn't set off the boulder. What did was picking up the idol afterwards. Which at that point doesn't make much sense, since the altar controlling the trap is blown to smithereens, the boulder should've activated from the explosion (or not activate at all).

The guy does his "Whoa, I'm about to fall!"-animation even when there's really no need to.

Minor thing: Some debris from a skull or vase thrown at a wall passed right in front of a dart trap without activating it. But I guess that's where suspension of disbelief comes in, having the traps activate from every minor thing would make it too easy.

Oh, and I got my shortcut back! YAY! But it was weird, I met the tunnel guy and he only asked for $3000. Now the shortcut seems to stay even between games.

(All this happened in a single run, and I got my most money collected at $60k so far...'twas a very eventful spelunking session.)

What are the trophies in the score room for? I mean, what does one have to do to get them?

They are like achievements. Try to do a lot of one thing and you might get better trophies. Getting the biggest trophy unlocks the room under it.

I also second the suggestion of the idol trap being activated if the tiles under the idol are destroyed, or else it can be easy to just blow the idol to a safe position and grab it far from the trap.

I'm getting the bug wherein I seem to constantly be holding "up" on my gamepad.  I've used google to try find a fix or workaround or whatever, but the only thing I can find is people mentioning that they have the problem who are immediately overlooked.
Can anybody help me out?

Until Derek fixes that I'd suggest using a keyboard.
