Congratulations on a great game.  This game is definitely driving people crazy (in a good way).  I hope that the idea of an 'action-based roguelike' (or something like that) catches on heavily, because it's fricking fun.

I imagine plenty of people would love to see this game in a portable format, like Nintendo DS homebrew or something.  How fantastic that would be.

Thanks for the fun game.  Hand Thumbs Up LeftGrin:handthumbsupR:

Even if you downright hate the game, I'd love to hear why!

I hate your fuckin' game, because I forget my life when playing it!!!  Angry

 Tears of Joy

And Delmion: WOW.  Hand Shake LeftCrazyHand Shake Right

I'll be honest and say that even I haven't accomplished that feat.

A plea to Derek:

Any plans to massively expand the item/enemy base any time in the future?  If not, would you allow the community to help in this endeavor?  I don't know your opinions on open-sourcing, but it seems that games in this vein (pseudo-roguelikes) benefit massively from direct community input to the game.  I'm sure if this game was expanded, it would be an instant goldmine classic.  It's so much fun as it is, and the pleasure is derived almost entirely from finding new item, enemy, and terrain interactions... I would gladly donate time updating a branch variant (SpelunkyTK+, SLASH-Spelunky, etc Tongue).

What do you think?

I'm a pretty big fan of open-source, modding, and all that jazz, so yeah, my plan is to release the Spelunky source (Game Maker .gmk) at some point after the 1.0 release.  The alternative would be to clutch the source to my chest and eventually be buried with it, but that doesn't sound like nearly as much fun! I'd love to see new monsters, items, and variants on the game.  I probably won't be adding too much new stuff to the game myself, as it feels pretty well-balanced to me right now, and every new thing involves a lot of balancing and bug fixes for me.  I'm trying to iron out what I've already got in there.  There will be some cool new stuff in the next version, but that'll be it.

At one point I was even envisioning Spelunky as an RPG (kind of like Ainevoltas 2), with different player classes, lots of weapons/spells/monsters, and a real inventory.  That's a project that I think would be better suited to the community at large.

I've downloaded the game, but when it starts there's no sound (effects, music). I can't think of anything I can do to fix it. Any ideas?

This is a feedback forum.  I'm aware you have quite the large post count (ooh sexy) but maybe you should let Derek decide what's worthless suggestions and such.  Because right now you sound like an elitist suck-up backseat moderator and I doubt that's how you're trying to come off.  Also don't mistake suggestions and ideas for demands.  Nobody is pointing a gun at Derek or holding pandas for ransom here.
[blah blah blah]

maybe you need to read my post again, i said that if Derek is ok with it, that's great Smiley
my post count doesn't resemble anything, and the difference from a suggestion and a demand is only a bunch of please and something like "i thought it would be great if..." instead of stuff like "i die too much doing this thing, it should be better like that".

Sorry to appear like an elitist of sorta, maybe i'm only too tired because working in the industry i receive a lot of demands masked as suggestions from my superiors on daily basis, while sometime i simply want to keep my stuff how i like it.

now, spelunky.

Delmion that's ace, i really want to unlock everything too WTF

I'm a pretty big fan of open-source, modding, and all that jazz, so yeah, my plan is to release the Spelunky source (Game Maker .gmk) at some point after the 1.0 release.  The alternative would be to clutch the source to my chest and eventually be buried with it, but that doesn't sound like nearly as much fun!

i'd love to try a c++ conversion, would be neat to compile it for gp2x or DS\PSP  Kiss

This post makes me really happy Smiley  If we could port Spelunky to something like the DS that would be the coolest thing EVER. Have you ever played POWDER before? It's a roguelike designed to be picked up quickly (for when you have a free half hour or so), and Spelunky reminds me of that a bit. More classes and weapons/spells/monsters would also be amazing! I think you've created a whole new branch of roguelikes, Derek, and I really hope more people are inspired by your work! Lets hear no silly "Spelunky rip-off!" type comments for the people that are sure to expand on this genre Wink

Edit: Could special pickups like the gloves and glasses, as well as held stuff like the shotgun, pickaxe, etc. be shown in some manner on the level end screen? For the purposes of show-offy "Look how lucky I got!" screenshots?  Grin

I would be all upons this.

Man, I would totally volunteer to port the game to C++, if only I had more time. As it stands, there are bunches of other coders around here who could have it done in less time (i.e. less than a decade).

I just joined because of Spelunky, but not because I wanted to say how awesome it is(Although it is awesome)

but to say that I'm having issue downloading the latest version, when I open the .rar file with Winrar I get a "Unexpected end of archive" error and it's only the sound folder thats in the .rar file.
I tried 7Zip and I got the same problem.

This saddens me because as great as 0.97.1 is... 0.98.1 has a level editor!! And Bug Fixes!

Also a strange thing I've noticed is that if I play the game on Computer A from Flashdrive F, And get $5000 as my high score, then I play it on Computer B from Flashdrive F and get $6000 as my high score, when I got back and play it on Computer A the high score is still $5000.

It's like the save data is relative to what computer I'm playing it on even when I running it off a flash drive(And this it should the same save file in the folder)

I noticed this when After playing it for hours on one computer I got little bronze cup above one of the doors in the score room, but when I went to play it on another computer the cup was gone, then when I went back the computer I got the cup on the cup was still there.

Thats all my bug reports for now.

I have noticed that most of the times that I throw down a rope and jump down to grab it, I end up missing the rope and falling straight to the ground. Is it just me or what?
Either way, could you expand the rope grabbing threshold by 2 or 4 pixels? Beg
The game is way too hard as it is, and this isn't something I should be worrying about.

I suspect this may also be because pressing down when you're not yet in climb mode or whatever doesn't grab into the rope, you have to press up first. I get this a lot too.

Yup; the game is storing the values in the registry of the computer it is being played on.  You could regularly export the keys and import them on the other computer, but that's kind of a pain.

Anyway, I thought my first post ought to be an informative one. Smiley

Great game!
