So after reading hundreds of pages of this thread, it seems that no one else here seems to love the rock as much as I do! I mean, it throws pretty far, can kill any basic enemy, can knock out most of the rest, and can even be aimed upwards! Obviously, the shotgun is much more powerful, and even the pistol and bow are superior to it. But if I drop my shotgun, I WILL chase after it, and occasionally end up doing something stupid in the process. If I lose a rock, I just pick up the one a couple feet away from me! So thank you Derek, for making the most common item in the game so practical and awesome.

I find the Damsel to be more effective than the rock. And she can't bounce back and smack you in the face neither!

I just had Spelunky freeze up on me, floating down with my cape on the first ice level. Weird thing is that the music kept on happily playing, then - despite all the visuals being seemingly frozen and Indie hanging in space - the "GHOST IMMINENT" message still appeared, then the music changed, then I heard the ghost noise. No death though, and I had to quit out using task manager.
Probably just a weird one-off glitch (first time I've had this happen in 1000 or so games) but thought it was worth mentioning anyway! Also worth a grumble since I had a ton of sticky bombs, cape, shotgun, compass and the ankh, and it was looking like a promising run. Pah!

This may be too complicated, but it would be cool if the cultists try to sacrifice you and the damsel.
That might make a good minigame: Stop the cultist from sacrificing the damsel. You could win by beating him to the altar and destroying it, making him drop the girl by hitting him and taking her to an exit, or by killing him. This relates to my suggestion earlier about a linear "race" mode for two players. Here, there'd be a single track, and you'd be racing against the AI.

snap - i just had a similar thing happen - on the 2nd or 3rd ice world, jetpacking about then landed grabbing hold of a walltip and visuals froze, then ghost message and music played + the actual noise of a ghost appearing. Playing the game windowed, and game says not responding in task manager. had 10 lives as well (game froze with the spooky music looking endlessly)

Hi there. Months passed, and i still like to play spelunky sometimes, but wait: i have beaten kali xx times. I've got to gold city. I've almost all minigames, but i dont use them anyway.
Derek Yu, throw in some endgame content! I mean some survie/arcade mode to keep playing, without the goal of killing giant Kali or localize city.
It could be for example a normal game, but it would return every random level, without dividsion of areas. I mean, it could bring a 1st level in jungle, 2nd in caves, 3rd again in jungle, another in ruins.. All to make it more differentiated, because i dont want to start over again in caves. And i dont want shortcut to ruins, because there are only 3 levels left:(
I would like just to play alot and beat epic records of survival. Is it possible? to make number of levels always x+1 and let me play infinitely? It would be really great, unnlockable after comlpeting the game. Any votes?

Ive been Spelunking once a day now, and I finally did it! On my 666th attempt (SPOOKY) I managed a complete full run through! (Including all the "extras")
SPOILER:
I got the eye, found the market, emptied the market (Jetpack! YESH!), Sacced the max to Kali, plundered the CoG (3 Mummies! Are you kidding me?) and even had one last shop keeper donate his shotgun for the final battle.
...and then I beat the game for a score of $406,725. I managed only 81 kills, which was a bummer. I probably should have gone looking for more dudes in the last few levels, or at least let more guys spawn at the end.
Of course, I still have to get gold in saves and time too, but for now, I think I am taking a break. Whew.

Hmm, there should be a set town, and you could travel to numerous dungeons each with a 'super boss' like Olmec and gain a reputation? Just kidding. It's great the way it is.

I feel silly as just some random guy on page 216, but this was great. I liked the mechanics and the menus... it just feels like a fun "casual adventure" game. The graphics and sounds were just top-notch. I don't know how you did it, but for me this really captured the will to explore and discover I haven't felt for a long time. It's magical.

Flares are secretly the best weapon in the game.

But flares can't be used around water.
Also, agreeing with Arexmastah.
I'd really like to see Spelunky Arcade Mode or such, where you just play as long as you can survive, and the levels are completely random instead of in a certain order.

Imho the rock and key are the most versatile weapons of all items (and are my favorite too), the scepter of course is the most powerful except that it targets corpses (maybe you should change that), and the damsel, while amusing as a weapon, can only be useful up close, and never in a narrow passage.
I also agree that there should be an 'endless' mode, I'm picturing like Nazi zombies from cod5 where it get progressively harder, but the items you get should become progressively better too. I agree that levels should be random worlds as well, but should have parts from different worlds too.
A few minor nitpicks: I think you should stand instead of wobble on the staircase platforms or branches, the teleporter should give you a warning indicator if it would teleport you into solid rock, when you open chests and go to pickup your item you end up picking up the empty chest it seems like there an item priority you should make chests lesser on that priority scale, I know people have already complained about this but the things in front of arrow traps prevent them from being activated with anything less than yourself maybe you could program some sort of check? I have no idea how that stuff works though so...
One last thing, the screen saver pops up while I'm playing this game with a controller, does that happen to anyone else? could it be because of vista or is it everybody or what?

Right-click the application and/or shortcut, and go to Properties. Make sure the "Allow Screen Saver" box is unchecked. "Bottomless Pit" mode would be rather epic, wouldn't it? That -is- another great idea, and it would make a great reward for having completed the game. Not only that, there's plenty of room to plug that in, on the main room. But then, the game already -is- endless in a sense, since replays are never identical. Putting in that "Endless Mode" might possibly remove the sensation of winning the game... perhaps a cool alternative would be similar to a "New Game +" every time you win, which basically restarts the levels with the cash you already have. (Doing that with the items would defeat a lot of the exploration point, however!) __________ Another interesting (but high-risk) strategy you may consider, for hanging on to your weapons, is either to drop all of your bombs or ropes, and use that for your flare/Damsel/idol/etc. juggling, while having your other item/weapon of choice "stashed." I still think having one more extra inventory slot to put away a weapon or teleporter/etc. is a good idea... though I can understand not being able to pocket some things (like Damsels or Corpses). Even pocketing lit flares is not usually the smartest move to make - even though you CAN do that, already. XD But really? Going through the game devoid of either bombs or ropes? ^.^' Probably not the best idea.

Whenever it forces me to use a flare, I'll then keep that flare and use it as my weapon as long as possible (or until something better comes along). I've been having a lot of fun doing Stupid Spelunky Tricks (jumping up and over the boulder with the right timing, navigating Jungle levels without a single bomb or rope, other crazy stuff I can't think of at the moment) which started when I got bored/frustrated with dying all the time, and I think that's helped a lot, actually.
Had a truly epic run the other day. I started off by killing a shopkeeper on the second floor for a couple items, and then on floors 3 and 4, there was a shop right next to the starting area. ^_^;; And then I found the Black Market. Unfortunately, the last shopkeeper got a lucky shot and shattered my ankh. But I figured I'd just keep going, even without the stuff the ankh leads to.
That was, until on a Rushing Water level, I'm bombing to get the last couple crates, and hit a small spike of lag right as the bomb went off, mistiming the explosion and walking into it while it was still in progress. >.<
