Sure, it might not be your thing. But I think the difference is, Aquaria was a decent example of a certain sort of game. A respectable upper-mid-level entry.
But Spelunky... well there's nothing else that really does what it does anyway, but even if there were it's hard to imagine it doing it better.
I mean, the tutorial is a bit frustrating. And the controls are slightly awkward. And the music is so jaunty I had to turn it off pretty quickly. It isn't perfect. But the thing is, none of that even seems relevant when discussing it. A respectable upper-mid-level game requires perfect presentation. But Spelunky doesn't, because at its core its gameplay just works so, so well, and has been developed so thoroughly.
well, there are other platformers with randomly generated levels, but i agree with this for the most part -- aquaria's genre is much more explored than this genre is

@being hurt while walking through doors:
It hasn't happened to me either, but every time there was such a chance, i was already halfway through the animation. Maybe you can only get hurt just as you start to go through the door? In which case you can get through spiketrapped doors if your fast enough.
It's not even really a matter of being fast enough. If you hold the up key, your spelunker will go through the door immediately when he is in front of it, no timing needed. As in timing the extension and retraction of the spikes, I mean. Ahh, that all depends on what's around. If there's nothing around, the spikes won't do anything until you get close, which makes it very easy to just walk through the door while holding up.

Again, anyone having troubles with music?
Music gets all choppy and I see that a supersound.dll's thread is eating up 50% of the CPU (single core) and fighting with the game thread.
This happens regardless if the gamepad is on or off, 1x or 3x, fullscreen or windowed.

I maded a level Using sticky bombs, you turn damsels into living time bombs to kill the shopkeepers, allowing you to get to the exit.

My girlfriend is hooked now, too. She's logged about 200 games in the last couple of days, and has just opened up the first shortcut.
I think I finally have an answer to the question "If you were on a desert island and could take one game with you, what would it be?"
Spelunky just keeps on giving.

Post that in the Custom levels section! I wanna play it! EDIT: Oh yea this is the TIG forums, not the spelunky ones. Could you show us the code? or put it in the custom level thread? easter egg? :D Edit: light spoilerage in the image, view at own risk. I'm afraid I don't get it. Explain?

Hurray! I finally finished it! Of course, I'd have to do a complete run to feel satisfied. I shall do so now.

The first time you play if you go into the tutorial door then go straight out the game freezes.

I know I'm about 280 pages late to the party, but this game is awesome :D I've just been hooked! Hey Derek, I think you should do some kind of "release" push since it's recently turned 1.0 . Get it out on there on Kotaku, do some interviews, etc. I know it'll probably go through a phase of that when it hits XBLA, but I reckon the PC version deserves its own fanfare You've probably already put thought into this, but I thought I'd open my big mouth anyway

300 deaths now, no win. Only twice ever did I get comparatively really far, namely to the world after the ice caves. I find it frustrating that the contrast between really great rounds like these and the, for me, highly common, boring and typical rounds is so great. Most of the times I get to around Level 6 or 7 and don't get any significant items or weapons. Maybe I'll get a pistol, but juggling it in a dark jungle area is very tedious and I end up getting killed by some trap or so. Then, one time I got a jetpack right away, pretty soon after that a shotgun and I could race through all the levels, rescue all dames, kill all enemies, no trouble at all. That was even nearly too easy. Of course, it shouldn't always be like that, but I think it's not even 1 out of 10 times that I have a round which isn't.. typical and boring That's not to say those "typical" rounds aren't also great, at least when you first begin with the game. But, by now I've grown terribly tired of them, and all that keeps me playing is the hope for these times that I'm actually getting some cool items, that I'm not unluckily dying to some trap right away, basically the times I'm actually having fun. But, they are few by now.

easter egg? :D Edit: light spoilerage in the image, view at own risk. That's really subtle. How did you notice it? Entirely by accident, I was just systematically trying to remove all terrain from the tutorial level and then suddenly there it was.
