sure, the rich suburban white people tend to drink bottled water in the US, but the majority, the poor, don't drink bottled water as their primary source of water. so it's still untrue that soda's less expensive
in any case, if bread causes obesity in the US, what does that have to do with soda anyway?

I doubt people eating too much bread is causing people in America to get fat. That would presume America made decent bread in the first place. THE BURNS WILL NEVER END

well i think it plays a very small part, especially white bread. basically white bread has a lot of the protein and fiber removed, and eating mostly empty carbohydrates with very low fiber and protein, combined with a high glycemic load, can lead to diabetes. i don't think it's the main reason, but it's one contributing factor for the main reason, my guess is it's just the pure amount of food people eat. people in the US eat about about 1500 calories more, on average, per day than 50 years ago. a single meal can sometimes be as many calories as what someone ate in a day in the 60s. here's a list of countries by the average calories eaten per day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_food_energy_intakethe US is at the top of the list, with 3770 calories *average* per person. which means half of all americans eat more than 3770 calories a day. i myself find that pretty bizarre; i once tried to force myself to eat 3000 calories in a day and couldn't. i'm 6'4 and 155 lbs, which is small but not that small. people in the US eat a staggering amount of food i mean, it shouldn't really be a mystery why people are obese if they eat almost twice as much as they did 50 years ago. there really isn't a need for any other deeper explanation than that

The tap water here is shit and tastes like bleach, so I get bottled water instead. The handheld bottles always taste like plastic, but the 3-liters only occasionally taste like plastic.

Since this thread already is about being pedantic: that's totally not what it means. A median of 3770 would mean that.

I don't care what the Atlantic Interpretation says, to me a sandwich is a piece of bread with something on it or two pieces of bread with something between them. Carbohydrate graphics (no carb bread has been a thing since forever), procedural lettuce or perma-mayo are all incidental.
I think if we want to find the real definition of sandwiches, we have to look at why people actually eat sandwiches. To me, there are 2 factors to this. First, sandwiches are portable and second, they taste good. This combination of portability and taste I think defines the essential character of the sandwich.
