From what I understand a retro game is something new but it looks or plays like an old game (i.e.,  Rogue's Souls), whereas an old game is one that came out a long time ago.

maybe its not too retro depending on your definition, but Gunstar Heroes is always what first comes to mind when this question gets asked. excellent game mechanics and a ton of variety, environments, zaniness, replayabilty, memorable characters etc. the limitations of the format meant nothing

Retro is often used to mean EITHER something new that imitates something old OR just something old. Semantics!

I'd have to go with either FF6 or A Link To The Past

this is correct. everyone who thinks retro game means old game is an idiot

a retro game is a game that isn't old, but is made to resemble old games in some way, for nostalgic purposes; it look backwards

e.g. mega man 9 and 10 are retro games, but mega man 1 and 2 are not

It's all just stereotypes innit. Like thinking that there wasn't anyone from the sixties who didn't dress like a hippie, all men took image tips from Italian fashion catalogues in the seventies and that you couldn't get a jacket without shoulder pads in the eighties.

Whereas the dictionaries agree with this definition of the word Retro, the descriptivist approach to language would be more pragmatic when the word is paired with the word Game. I don't know who led the charge, but print magazines and online alike, with names like Retro Gamer, or GamesTM's Retro, are pretty much in agreement that 'Retro Game' signifies 'Old game'. Call the publishers idiots if you like, but the word Retro has been reappropriated, and we've passed the point where arguing to the contrary would make any difference.

A more interesting debate is what qualifies as 'old' in any case.

Mega Man X or Commander Keen

EDIT: I'm assuming the OP meant legitimately old game, not retro game.
I hear a lot of people use the word "retro" to mean dated
