(i prefer 3 over 2)

Not retro, but I think this is the best of the M/Wario land games.

Of the older Wario Lands, I preferred 3. The overworld, day/night, seeing how objects interact with other worlds, individual puzzles/gauntlets to getting those objects, nonlinearity in item accumulation, etc.

Of the whole series, 3 and Shake It/Dimension are pretty tied

4 is reeeeeeeeeeally good, but from a nerdy design standpoint (the same reasons vinheim3 so expertly outlined) I'm sticking with 3.

I like 2 slightly more than three because of all the branching paths. Beating the game for the first time and seeing all the different routes that were possible blew my mind. Not to mention that one of the paths just has you electing to not wake Wario up at the beginning of the game. That's fucking brilliant. I still love 3, though. Sorry about my flip response up above.

I've got to say despite not being the biggest fan of 2, I really liked that you could do that.

Best Retro game I can think of other than the common choices (Spelunky, Cave Story):

Domo Kun's Angry Smash Fest is awesome too:

Does Shovel Knight count if it only looks like a retro game?  Cheesy

But seriously, it would probably have to be Live-A-Live or Chrono Trigger.

My favorite retro game has to be Yoshi's Island. The music and the art is great. I've replayed more times than I'm willing to admit.
