Please, please do not use a controller scheme for mobile touch devices.
this might convince you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBHircZu5EI

it doesn't convince me.. show me one arcade game, like Gunslugs is, with swipe controls that works and I show you 10+ games with simple touch-controller schemes that also work very well Smiley

Yeah, there are many platformers that work really well on a touchscreen and this one hits all the right marks judging by the screenshot:

  • Simple left/right input instead of full dpad
  • Only two action buttons
  • Camera keeps the ground level above the controls so thumbs don't cover up anything important

Platformers are my favorite type of game, and I enjoy playing them on my phone even if they can't be as complicated as they can with an actual controller.  The game just needs to keep the limitations of the device in mind.

This looks great, btw!  The ladder climbing with the jump button is a great idea since you already use the jump button to move up in other situations.

thanks,
I do have some experience with mobile platformers: meganoid , stardash, Gunslugs 1 and a few more, and I usually get great ratings/reviews for the controls

I indeed plan on keeping the controls simple (4 buttons is already pushing it, but I limit the moments that you both use jump+shooting at once) and they will rarely block the action.

and it will also get released on pc's and micro-consoles, so people don't have to use the touch at all Wink

I think this guy is the exception to that rule. Check his stuff out if you have a futurephone, he has already built up a pretty respectable body of work and his games really do work well.

Some new work-in-progress screenshots for Gunslugs 2:

Nice flamethrowers which will mostly appear inside the tower levels

The "wild wild west" level is new, and it comes with some steam-punk-ish enemies like this spider thing (bounces up and down and shoots .. a lot)

and a steam punk tank, which you can drive in as long as you shoot the original driver out of it Wink

A lot of progress made, here's some screenshots!

The train conductor from the first game returns, this time in an important role: help you catch the train which is actually the next level!

Of course running on top of a train... rarely ends well..

but the train DOES bring you into the "Wastelands" which is where the action continues!

Aiming to have a new gameplay vid tomorrow!

Two new area's (since last video) and an awesome train-ride which has to be
seen animated and not in static screenshots Wink

been a while, so here's some quick new eye-candy on Gunslugs 2..  A lot of content has been made, a lot of little changes to the way things move, how fast things shoot, etc ,etc..  It's gonna be a bigger and better game than the first Gunslugs!  (www.gunslugs.com)
