The Ruins of Old Earth is a 2D sidscroller in the vein of metroid and other similar games.
MUSIC COMPOSERS need not apply I already have someone working on music.

Story or something:
_________________________________________________

An exiting underground world filled with danger around every corner, planet earths inner levels are just being uncovered by humanity. You, a sole explorer on his own mission of discovery, have stumbled uppon a newly found region filled with harsh creatures and ruins of a mysterious culture.

Things and stuff:
_________________________________________________

Enemys:

So far I have ~10 enemies, and i'll be adding more soon.

The player:

Armed with a lazer cannon, other guns and an awesome jetpack... that's it for now. I'll give him some sort of backstory later. You can shoot in all eight directions, if you where wondering.

Weapons (pic is old):

Type 1: Lazer
You start out with the lazer gun, the weakest and most boring of all si-fi weapons.
Each upgrade is a linear "fires faster" boost, as to make you want to try out the other guns.

Type 2: Beam
You can find this gun in a secluded room left by the old civilization, firing a beam that moves faster as it flys, on contact with anything it explodes into a shower of deadly sparks.

Type 3: Pulse
My favorite so far, the pulse gun is the final gun, it slowly fires slow moving, hard hitting bubbles of death that bounce off walls. Each upgrade makes the projectile faster, bigger, and bounce more times.

(OLD) Screenshots:

Unlocked the door and upgraded health or something like that

(OLD) GIFS galore:

Fully upgraded weapons

Defeating a sentinel barge

Unlocking a door

Fishies, water, and algee

General gameplay

The game looks awesome, I really like the metroid style tiles and how every thing fades into shadow to  an eventual black background.

The name though, seems ultra generic and boring to me. How about something more adventure evoking like "The Moons of Crestos" or something.

I'm going to have to agree with Geothermal. For a game that looks as cool as this, you're going to need a unique name to boot. 'Terrestria' makes me think "Terraria", and that's not necessarily what you want going through the heads of everyone when they first discover this game, as they'll more often than not subconsciously go in with certain assumptions about the game that may or (more of then than not) not be true.

I agree that Terrestria isn't the best name, but I think Moons of Crestos is worse. This game looks awesome by the way.

Thanks for all the feedback!
The game is really early in development, so the name can easily be changed.
How about something like, Caves of *cool sounding word that means underground*?

This seems pretty sweet! I also agree about the name; it made me think of Terraria right off the bat.
That association isn't necessarily a good thing for this kind of title.
I kind of like the "Ruins of..." idea for a name.

Anyways, it looks interesting and fun!
And should the time come when you want retro esque music for your project, I would be happy to provide you with some.

To go with what you said, the latin word for ruins/ash is cinis. What about Caves of Cinis?

I'm a huge fan of one-word names and especially of wordplay so what came to mind for me... what about Cinister.

Sinistar might have some words with you. And those words would be "I HUNGER..."

Gotta love that type of art style, of course!

What's your plans for the players weapon? Will it be upgradable as they progress? Or will there be different types of weapons the player can find the more he explores?

There's only one weapon ATM, but the way I have the engine setup I can easily add more weapons, with their own upgrades if you think it's a good idea.

I think weapon upgrades are a pretty fun part of metroidvanias, definitely.

UPDATE 1
-----------------------------
Weapons and Stuff

I promised I would update every weekend so here are the weapons and their upgrades.

Type 1: Lazer (DONE!)
You start out with the lazer gun, the weakest and most boring of all si-fi weapons.
Each upgrade is a linear "fires faster" boost, as to make you want to try out the other guns.

Type 2: Beam (DONE!)
You can find this gun in a secluded room left by the old civilization, firing a beam that burns through enemys very slowly. Each upgrade makes the beam wider and last longer, raising accuracy.

Type 3: Pulse (DONE!)
My favorite so far, the pulse gun is the final gun, it slowly fires slow moving, hard hitting bubbles of death that bounce off walls. Each upgrade makes the projectile faster, bigger, and bounce more times.
