You should change the player sprite to a little dog or cheburashka or somethin

Why?

Just imagine him holding a gun

I am kinda going for a serious vibe, and I feel he might be too silly to add. Sorry.

UPDATE 1.5
-----------------------------
More Progress!

Just thought I'd ad a little sneak update.

Added:

Changed health system, small hearts add health and big hearts increase max health.

Made logo for my internet facade, added intro animation with said logo.

Added lava, interacts with player the way water does, but slows you more and gives damage over time.

Added lava sparks, little balls of fire that shoot out of the top of bodies of lava. Watch out!

Finished one new enemy, will be unveiled with the other new ones on Saturday.

Cool to see more progress, but I think the lava is too dark. It looks like dirt or a dark liquid. A more bright color like the pulse orbs would probably look good. In fact, that red and yellow probably would work well.

EDIT: Looking back, I now realize what you meant. I'll edit the look of it.

Will the player be able to traverse lava later in the game through equipment upgrades?

That would be a great idea for a soft lock, but I don't know what kind of equipment to make for that.

I'd imagine some kind of armor/suit upgrade, like a, barrier suit Well, hello there!
I only ask because that last screen makes the lava pit look bottomless, which by Metroidvania logic would imply you could go down there & find more stuff off screen. Granted it could just be a floor, but I had to ask to clarify.

UPDATE 2
-----------------------------
Small progress

Less stuff got done than I had hoped for, but it's not too big of a deal.
The teased enemy was a giant snail, it's a tank type enemy, following the player very slowly, and hits for two hearts. The other is the first of a group of sentinels left by the old civilization, a patrol guard with a lazer gun. Next week will hopefully be more enemys, more traps, and some equipment to help get through lava.

After a few more updates, i'll work on getting the level design down, which will be the last thing. I don't want anyone playing the game before it's done, because I don't know whether or not i'll ask for money. I will have beta testers for balancing. If you want to do that, PM me.

Also, if your monitor resolution is less than 1200x700, I would love some help in testing the screen resolution.

I have a Macbook from 2008 with Macos and Win8 installed. That might help, testing in an older computer.

What do you guys think about a subtle CRT shader?

I wouldn't really call that a CRT effect at all. That said, I kinda like how it looks anyway. It makes me think more of something like a Gameboy Color, Game Gear, or Atari Linx screen.

I see what you mean. I was going for CRT, bit the game is scaled 2x2, so I can't really fit to much detail into the overlay.
