OK, let's look at it another way: Cave Story is inadmissable! :D

But seriously - I'm with I Like Cake, in that cake is good, but also that by the terms of the thread we are looking for games that depart from video game norms and use music that doesn't fit the stereotype. As for Cave Story being original, that's for another thread I feel.

By 'other thread' you mean 'other flame war about the definition of words.'

That's a can of worms I'd really rather not open up, but I think we can all agree to disagree or agree to various degrees, as it were.

There's a REALLY nice song in Wario Ware Smooth Moves, on the driving level. I'll try and find it by the magic of internet.

In the rain or in the snow, Parappa's got the funky flow.

Edit:
As for Cave Story being original, that's for another thread I feel.
That sounds like a job for the Shitty Topic Guy!

The soundtrack of We ♥ Katamari was pretty unusual.  Also, I've never played it, but the music of Loco Roco sounds pretty awesomely unusual too.

Parappa is pretty unusual indeed. Katamari damacy series have interesting soundtracks too...

I'll try to think of other titles...

Two things come to my mind--the "airship" music in Dragon Warrior 4 and the Dark Rift in Skies of Arcadia. Oh, and how about Beyond Forbidden Forest?

You rang? lol....I think that that topic may be a little too shitty for me Smiley

Man, the music in Katamari drives me nuts.....walking down the street and all of a sudden "na na na na na na na nah katamari damacy" damnit.

Interesting music? Hmm, I would have to go with "R" the hoverboard level's track and especially the singing mine....oh man, the singing mine was awesome lol...

Also, I just want to add, while not particularly original the music for the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game on NES rocked!

I always liked the music for Terramex, a C64 side-scrolling adventure.  It's actually quite complex: it sort of weaves in and out of a military march, incidental music, and a pop tune.

Also, the original music for Gesundheit is unusual and very cool.

When I think about excellent game music, I am always reminded of the first 'console' I ever had (actually, it was my dad's): the Atari 800XL. So I'm gonna look up a couple of my favourites. They may not be "unusual", but I think they managed to squeeze such brilliant and evocative music out of such limited hardware, and it always surprises me to look back and see just how awesome game music could be.

This brings tears to my eyes:

It's so beautiful, I love it. It also brings back memories of being a little child. God I miss those Alternate Reality games. I'll have to dig 'em out, on emulator unfortunately Sad

Here's a remix of another great game's music; Zybex. This will always make my 'favourite games' list:

A classic:

So many years spent mastering that game. Tongue

Another excellent tune from the same composer who made the Alternate Reality music:

In fact, I highly recommend looking up the original Alternate Reality games. They have some excellent music.

locco rocco anyone?

you can check out some of the soundtrack on it's myspace (of all things) http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=111457497

much of the game only has one track that has different variations on the theme, dependent on the type of characters you are using, i think. another unusual fact is that although there are lyrics, it is made up of complete jibberish! and catchy jibberish at that.

another game worth mentioning is the 'bit generations' series that came out for the gba: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n08/bit_g/index.html

the games take that clicky-chip tune goodness of the old days but give them a more contemporary spin. i was listening to some of the tracks whilst working yesterday and found it pretty good to have in the background, not terribly distracting.
