A friend and I are going to develop a game (his first game, my first game in years). It is for a small contest where you have 2 weeks to develop a game, but it must some how incorporate at least one of 3 selected Bible verses.

The Game

The Ninja Illusion will be a fast-paced 2d brawler where nothing exists as you see it. As a Christian ninja on a mission (that's right), you'll find darting across city rooftops, running up walls, and battling enemy forces to be a quest quite unlike it first appears...

We'll post our progress and screenshots here.

12 days left.

It's been a busy 5 days (apparently we were given 17 days). In spite of it being a rather short contest, we've only so far tackled the design document. As much as we're very, very eager to start game development, this will be important in order to stay focused and make sure all work we do takes us in the direction of our goal. It's going to be a tricky subject to pull off.

It is also the first time either one of us has used Google Docs. Nice! Really awesome stuff! I'm sure everyone has probably already had experience with this but it is so cool to work on something simultaneously with another person, in real time.

Game influences
Dust: An Elysian Tale - The fighting mechanics are nice in here though we probably can't pull off the depth
Shank - Interesting platforming mechanics
Canabalt - Again the platforming mechanic here. And procedural rooftops. Also, the environmental "story" being told is awesome. I'm sure our game won't be as elegant.
Castle crashers - Mostly the art style here...
Super Smash Bros - Experimenting with an energy system influenced by Smash Brothers
Halo - 30 second rule

This won't be "a clone of this and that with a touch of that". They are simply influences during our discussion of the game design.

Finally, this is my first time using Unity so that has been an interesting learning curve. Hopefully we're ready to start development tonight, after a break Sunday and being introduced to Unity last night.

Finally making progress! Quite a lot of learning and experimenting to learn the "Unity way" of things. With only a week left I'm not sure we'll finish in time but there is still hope. Here's our progress sans hand drawn graphics.
