Hey mmortall, thanks for your tutorials. I looked at the one with the fog of war in particular, and was wondering: couldn't you simply use the vertex colors? I haven't used Unity in a while (just getting back to it), but I believe that you can access and modify them at runtime.

Anyway, nice snippets, much appreciated!
