Are chat rooms still a thing that exist? I'm unemployed and sleeping all day, and I really just want somewhere to hang out and talk about nerd shit after my friends have gone to bed. (I am on Eastern time, if it matters.)

IRC is as alive as it always was, just find a channel that's active.

The thing with IRC is that there simply isn't any proper competitor for what it does. It's basically the halfway point between IM and message boards (a chat with many people, but with operators taking care of the order in the channel). It also lacks features such as fonts and images that if allowed would be a disaster (it's fine for an one-on-one chat, but imagine that in a channel with dozens of users, it's bound to get abused).
