Waltz Time!!!
As per common law:
-I (the host) will provide a theme for the challenge.
-You will be given three weeks to compose one song with said theme.
-The song must be a new track made for this challenge.
-You will post your song here, in the official challenge thread.
-Other participants will listen to your song. You will listen to other participants' songs. Critique will be had.
-A winner will be chosen by the host.
-The winner will host the next challenge.

Description: As surprising as it may be, you find yourself in a large ballroom, unknowingly thrown into the dancing large mass of nicely dressed…. Well, are they people, ghosts, other-worldly creatures? You decide!  Gentleman

The goal of this challenge is to create a waltz (generally 3/4 but can be 6/8 if you wish). Can be creepy, happy, sad, you name it. It can also be made with any instrumentation you wish… You want to make a dubstep/chiptune/(insert any other sort of instrumentation you please)? Have at it!

Rules:
-Should have a general formal dance feel
-Must have a 3/4 or 6/8 time signature

Other than that have a ball!

Judging:

I will choose 3 finalists and create a poll to elect a winner

You will be judged on:

Creativity: Is the piece memorable? Are there parts that stick out to the listener making them want to listen/dance to? Creativity is a biggie in my book, step out of your comfort zone be it instrumentation, melody, harmony, etc. Try to come up with something new!
Production: Is the piece sequenced/recorded/mixed well?
Overall theme: Does the piece fit the theme of a waltz?

Deadline: Whenever it isn’t August 22, 2014 anywhere in the world

Examples:

Kingdom Hearts II - Waltz of the Damned:

Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre:

Super Mario Bros – Underwater: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBx-8jqiGfA

As stated above, critique will be had both from me and amongst yourselves. As a newer composer I find critique hard to come by(might be a tad shy), but very helpful when I get it! Be a pal and offer some constructive criticism to other posts if you have the time, thanks!

Well now. A waltz is certainly something I haven't done much with. This should be interesting.

Agreed. This sounds incomplete. You could do so much more with this. I recommend you take it down and keep working on it.

Yeah, it kind of just sounds like a melody floating around in musical space. Like a sketch. It could use 2 or 4 more parts and maybe some percussion elements to really feel like a complete piece of music. Nice enough start, though.

I've never written anything even resembling a waltz before - it was fun! I think I got a little carried away on the chord progression though.

Question to the Challenge Host: I was wandering if it would be ok to make some parts in the music not 4/3 or 6/8. Lemme explain: I was thinking about a phrase that had 3 4/3 bars and the last bar would be 4/4, then it "loops back". Is it ok?

Haha good question!! I say yes, but SPARINGLY. We're going for a waltz, so if you think that your piece needs a 4-bar phrase consisting of 3 bars of 3/4 and 1 bar of 4/4 to make it work in the way you're looking for, then okay. But again it should still sound/feel like a waltz  Wink

I'm surprised that entries are showing up already! Keep it up guys!

Just out of curiosity: Is it required to use a SoundCloud link? I'm a firm Bandcamp supporter but I didn't want to give off a 'please buy my song' vibe by posting a Bandcamp link.

Absolutely, you can totally use Bandcamp/Dropbox/any other music sharing site! As long as we can hear it, it's all good!

Also I'm loving the latest submissions, keep 'em rolling you guys!

Alrighty. You said 'step out of your comfort zone'; I feel like I just jumped into a pool filled with Nicholas Cage's toe nails.  I've never written anything like this before but lemme tell you, it was SO MUCH FUN. It's called 'Waltz Of The Ghost Choir'
