I'm doing an RPG currently and would like to open discussion about the GUIs in RPGs for some research. Mostly in 2D isometric/orthographic RPGs.

What do you prefer? Is it the all-in-the-screen type like in Spiderweb's games or Eschalon or mostly hidden and behind buttons like in Baldur's Gate, Diablo etc.

Personally, I like the hidden behind buttons layout. It gives more focus on the environment, if the art is good for the eyes that is. Dialogues that pop up from the bottom are great.

EDIT: And I just found the GUI Hell topic
